Is diarrhea alone a possible symptom of HIV infection?
About a month ago, I had sexual intercourse, but the unprotected part lasted only 1 to 2 minutes.
Recently, I have noticed that my stools are often unformed (with visible food remnants), and I feel a lot of rumbling in my stomach.
During bowel movements, there is also a significant amount of gas (flatulence), and my bowel movement frequency has increased a bit, averaging about three times a day.
However, aside from this situation, I do not have any other symptoms such as fever, headache, or fatigue.
Could diarrhea related to HIV present in this way, or am I just scaring myself? I'm really worried.

Hello: HIV cannot be diagnosed based on symptoms alone; a blood test is necessary.
You should seek medical examination.
Wishing you good health.

Diarrhea can be a symptom of HIV infection, but it is important to understand that diarrhea alone is not definitive for diagnosing HIV. The context of your recent sexual activity and the nature of your symptoms are crucial in assessing your risk and potential infection.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) can lead to a range of symptoms, especially during the acute infection phase, which typically occurs 2 to 4 weeks after exposure. Common symptoms during this phase can include fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, rash, and muscle aches. Diarrhea can also occur, but it is usually accompanied by other systemic symptoms. In the case of HIV, diarrhea may become chronic and is often associated with opportunistic infections or other complications in individuals with advanced HIV/AIDS.
In your situation, where you experienced unprotected sexual contact for a brief period, it is understandable to be concerned about potential HIV infection. However, the presence of diarrhea without other accompanying symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or significant weight loss may not strongly indicate HIV infection. Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of factors, including dietary changes, stress, gastrointestinal infections, or other non-HIV-related conditions.
It's also worth noting that the type of diarrhea associated with HIV is often more severe and persistent, frequently leading to dehydration and significant weight loss. In contrast, the symptoms you describe—loose stools, gas, and occasional food remnants—could be attributed to a less serious gastrointestinal issue, such as a mild infection or dietary intolerance.
If you are concerned about HIV, the best course of action is to get tested. HIV tests, including the fourth-generation antigen/antibody tests, can detect the virus within a few weeks after exposure. If you test negative but still have concerns, it is advisable to retest after the window period, which is typically around three months for most tests.
In summary, while diarrhea can be a symptom of HIV, it is not specific enough to warrant a diagnosis on its own, especially in the absence of other symptoms. It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation and testing to address your concerns. They can provide guidance on the appropriate tests and help interpret the results in the context of your overall health and risk factors. Remember, early detection and treatment are key in managing HIV effectively if you are found to be positive.
