Genital issues
Hello doctor, I have a question.
If I pull my thighs to my chest and spread my legs wide (around 90 degrees, possibly even wider), will this cause the hymen to rupture? After doing this movement, I felt a slight pain in my lower body and a cool sensation, which makes me quite worried.
Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

When it comes to concerns about the integrity of the hymen after stretching exercises, it's important to understand the anatomy and physiology of the hymen, as well as the nature of stretching exercises.
The hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening. It is often associated with virginity, but this is a misconception. The hymen can vary significantly in shape and thickness among individuals, and it can be stretched or torn due to various activities, not just sexual intercourse. Activities such as tampon insertion, gynecological examinations, and vigorous physical activities can also affect the hymen.
In your case, performing a stretching exercise where you bring your thighs close to your chest and spread your legs wide (approximately 90 degrees or more) is unlikely to cause significant damage to the hymen. Stretching exercises primarily involve the muscles and ligaments, and while they may create some pressure in the pelvic area, they do not typically exert enough force to rupture the hymen. However, if you felt discomfort or pain during or after the exercise, it could be due to muscle strain or tension rather than damage to the hymen itself.
It's also worth noting that some individuals may experience a sensation of discomfort or a "cool" feeling in the pelvic area after intense stretching, which could be attributed to muscle fatigue or the stretching of ligaments rather than any injury to the hymen. If the discomfort persists or worsens, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
In summary, while it's natural to have concerns about the hymen and its integrity, the specific stretching exercise you described is unlikely to cause any harm to it. If you experience ongoing pain or discomfort, seeking medical advice would be a prudent step to ensure that there are no underlying issues. Always listen to your body, and if something feels wrong, it's best to err on the side of caution and consult a healthcare provider.
