After undergoing retinal laser treatment, my eyes feel strange?
I have been experiencing fixed shadows in my vision.
A couple of weeks ago, I was diagnosed with a retinal tear in both eyes and underwent laser treatment.
However, after the laser procedure, I noticed a wavy sensation and flashes in my right eye.
The doctor examined me and said there was nothing to worry about.
Initially, my left eye had a feeling of obstruction after the treatment, but that sensation went away.
About a week later, I suddenly felt like there was something blocking my left eye, but I had to concentrate to notice it.
When I consulted my doctor, he mentioned that what I was seeing might be related to the vitreous, as the vitreous in my left eye is starting to detach.
Recently, I have also noticed a fixed shadow in the lower left area of my right eye, which is small and could be described as an obscured area.
It seems like my left eye has similar issues, where sometimes I can see it and sometimes I cannot.
I have to tilt my head to see those shadows.
I would like to ask the doctor if this is normal.
I have been diagnosed with optic nerve atrophy in my right eye, but the doctor said it is only suspected glaucoma and that I need to be monitored.
Ever since the laser treatment, I have been experiencing these strange phenomena, whether it’s wavy vision or fixed shadows.
I want to know if what I am seeing is due to scarring from the laser treatment.
Since I am currently abroad and it’s inconvenient to see a doctor, and considering that last week I underwent dilation and they said everything looked fine and just needed to be monitored, I am really worried about new symptoms appearing.
So, I would like to ask the doctor if these symptoms are common after laser treatment, or if I am being overly sensitive.

After undergoing laser treatment, you should not experience the symptoms you mentioned.
However, if you have already had a thorough examination with dilation and no new findings were detected, there is likely no need for concern.

More Info
After undergoing laser eye treatment, particularly for issues like retinal holes, it is not uncommon to experience various visual disturbances. Your symptoms, including the perception of water waves, flashes, and fixed shadows, can be concerning, especially when they occur after a procedure intended to improve your vision. Let's break down your situation and provide some insights into what you might be experiencing.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Water Waves and Flashes: These sensations can often be attributed to changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye. After laser treatment, the vitreous may become more mobile or begin to detach from the retina, leading to visual phenomena such as flashes of light or the perception of waves. This is generally a normal response, especially if the vitreous is pulling away from the retina, but it should be monitored.
2. Fixed Shadows: The presence of fixed shadows or dark spots in your vision can be more concerning. These could be due to several factors, including:
- Vitreous Detachment: As the vitreous detaches, it can cast shadows on the retina, which you may perceive as fixed dark spots.
- Retinal Changes: If there are any changes to the retina itself, such as new tears or areas of detachment, these could also manifest as shadows in your vision.
- Optic Nerve Issues: Given your diagnosis of possible optic nerve atrophy and suspected glaucoma, it’s crucial to monitor any changes in your vision closely.
3. Sensitivity to Changes: It’s natural to feel anxious about new symptoms, especially after a significant procedure like laser treatment. However, it’s essential to differentiate between normal post-operative symptoms and those that require further investigation.
Recommendations
1. Follow-Up Care: Continue to have regular follow-ups with your eye care provider. If you notice any significant changes in your symptoms, such as an increase in the size or number of shadows, or if you experience a sudden loss of vision, seek immediate medical attention.
2. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep a journal of your symptoms, noting when they occur and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your eye doctor in determining the cause of your visual disturbances.
3. Understanding Laser Treatment Effects: It’s important to understand that laser treatments can have various effects on the eye, and while some disturbances are normal, others may indicate complications. Your doctor may have reassured you that your current symptoms are not alarming, but if you feel that your concerns are not being adequately addressed, consider seeking a second opinion.
4. Managing Anxiety: If your anxiety about your vision is overwhelming, consider speaking to a mental health professional. They can help you develop coping strategies to manage your fears about your eye health.
Conclusion
In summary, while some visual disturbances post-laser treatment can be normal, it is crucial to remain vigilant and proactive about your eye health. Regular check-ups and open communication with your eye care provider are essential. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your vision is vital, and ensuring its health should be a priority.
