Surgical mole excision?
Hello doctor, two days ago I had surgery at a plastic surgery clinic to remove moles, one on my nostril and one on my lip.
Is it normal for the area around my nostril and lip to be swollen? The wounds are not painful, but one side of my face is a bit swollen.

More Info
After mole removal surgery, especially in sensitive areas like the nose and lips, some degree of swelling is quite common and generally considered normal. The surgical procedure involves cutting through the skin, which can lead to localized inflammation as part of the body's natural healing response. This swelling is typically due to the accumulation of fluid and immune cells in the area, which helps to facilitate healing.
In the first few days following the surgery, it is not unusual to experience swelling around the surgical site. The extent of swelling can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the size of the mole, the technique used during the procedure, and individual healing responses. In most cases, the swelling should begin to subside within a few days to a week.
While the absence of pain is a positive sign, it is important to monitor the swelling. If the swelling continues to increase or if you experience additional symptoms such as redness, warmth, or discharge from the surgical site, it could indicate an infection or other complications. In such cases, it would be advisable to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
To manage the swelling, you can take several steps:
1. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the swollen area can help reduce inflammation and provide relief. Make sure to wrap ice or a cold pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin, which can cause frostbite.
2. Elevation: Keeping your head elevated, especially while sleeping, can help reduce swelling. This position encourages fluid drainage away from the surgical site.
3. Avoid Strain: Try to avoid strenuous activities or anything that could put pressure on the area, as this may exacerbate swelling.
4. Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Adhere to any specific care instructions provided by your surgeon, including how to clean the area and any medications prescribed.
5. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying well-hydrated and consuming a balanced diet can support your body's healing process.
In summary, some swelling after mole removal on the nose and lips is normal and should gradually improve. However, keep an eye on the area for any signs of complications, and do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have concerns. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation.
