Is it normal for the nose to be swollen after rhinoplasty?
Hello Doctor: I am someone who just had rhinoplasty four days ago.
Today, I removed the tape from my nose and noticed that it is swollen and enlarged, and the shape has changed.
Additionally, there are bruises and swelling around my eyes.
My nose is not painful, but there is a small amount of bleeding.
Is this what is referred to as the postoperative recovery period? Or could it be a sign of rejection? My surgeon is currently on leave for a few days, so I have no choice but to seek your help.
I hope you can reply at your earliest convenience.
Thank you!

Unless there is redness accompanied by abnormal pain, there is a possibility of infection; therefore, your current condition is indeed a normal postoperative recovery period.

After undergoing rhinoplasty, it is quite common to experience swelling and bruising in the nasal area and surrounding regions. The swelling you are observing is a normal part of the healing process following surgery. When tissues are manipulated during the procedure, they can become inflamed, leading to an increase in fluid accumulation in the area, which manifests as swelling. This is particularly true in the case of rhinoplasty, where the nasal structure is altered, and the surrounding tissues are affected.
Typically, the most significant swelling occurs within the first few days post-surgery, and it can take several weeks for the swelling to subside completely. In your case, since you are only four days post-operation, it is expected that you will see noticeable swelling and possibly some bruising around the eyes, which is often referred to as "raccoon eyes." This is due to the gravitational pull of fluids and blood that can accumulate in the lower eyelid area after surgery.
The slight bleeding you mentioned is also not uncommon in the immediate aftermath of rhinoplasty. However, it is essential to monitor the amount and frequency of bleeding. If it becomes excessive or is accompanied by severe pain, you should seek medical attention promptly.
As for the concern regarding rejection, it is important to note that rejection is not typically a concern with rhinoplasty unless foreign materials (like implants) are used. Most rhinoplasty procedures involve reshaping the existing nasal structures, which are your own tissues. Therefore, the swelling and bruising you are experiencing are more likely due to the surgical trauma rather than a rejection response.
To aid in your recovery, here are some general recommendations:
1. Rest and Elevation: Keep your head elevated, especially while sleeping, to help reduce swelling. Using extra pillows can assist with this.
2. Cold Compresses: Applying cold compresses to the swollen areas can help minimize swelling and alleviate discomfort. Be sure to wrap ice packs in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.
3. Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or any activities that could increase your blood pressure and exacerbate swelling.
4. Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Adhere to any specific instructions given by your surgeon regarding medications, cleaning the surgical site, and follow-up appointments.
5. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Proper hydration and nutrition can support your body’s healing process.
6. Monitor for Signs of Infection: While some swelling and bruising are normal, watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge from the surgical site, and contact your surgeon if these occur.
In summary, the swelling and bruising you are experiencing are typical responses to rhinoplasty and should gradually improve over the coming weeks. If you have any concerns about your recovery or if symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Your well-being is paramount, and they can provide the best advice tailored to your specific situation.
