Nasal augmentation with swelling reduction injections?
Hello, doctor.
I had a rhinoplasty in August, and during my follow-up appointment today, the doctor administered a swelling reduction injection.
After the injection, I noticed that the tip of my nose seems even more swollen, and it still feels hard and large, with little reduction in swelling.
I would like to know if there is usually a period of swelling after the injection.
If so, how long does it typically take for the swelling to completely subside after the injection?

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
To reduce swelling after rhinoplasty, initial ice compresses are very important.
Swelling reduction injections can increase local blood flow and expedite the reduction of swelling, but they may also cause temporary swelling.
Since it has been over a month since your surgery, you should be experiencing reduced swelling.
Please discuss your prognosis with your surgeon during your follow-up appointment.

After undergoing rhinoplasty, it's common to experience swelling as part of the healing process. The swelling can be particularly pronounced in the first few weeks following the surgery, and it may take several months for the final results to become apparent. When you mention receiving anti-swelling injections, it's important to understand that while these injections can help reduce inflammation and promote healing, they may not eliminate swelling immediately.
Typically, after rhinoplasty, the initial swelling peaks around 3 to 5 days post-surgery and then gradually begins to subside. However, even after receiving anti-swelling injections, you may still notice that your nose feels hard or appears larger than expected. This is because the tissues are still healing and adjusting. The swelling can fluctuate, and it’s not uncommon for patients to feel that their nose is still swollen even after treatment.
In terms of recovery, the timeline for swelling reduction can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, most of the swelling will resolve within the first few weeks, but some residual swelling can persist for several months. It can take up to a year for the final shape of the nose to fully settle, especially in the case of more extensive procedures.
Regarding your specific question about how long it will take for the swelling to completely subside after receiving anti-swelling injections, it can vary. Many patients notice a significant reduction in swelling within a few weeks, but complete resolution may take longer. It’s essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include avoiding strenuous activities, keeping your head elevated, and using cold compresses to help manage swelling.
If you continue to experience significant swelling or if the area feels excessively hard, it’s advisable to follow up with your surgeon. They can assess whether the swelling is within the normal range or if there are any complications that need to be addressed.
In addition to the physical aspects of recovery, emotional support is also crucial during this time. Many patients feel anxious about their appearance post-surgery, and it’s important to communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and guidance throughout your recovery process.
In summary, while anti-swelling injections can aid in reducing inflammation, it’s normal to experience some degree of swelling for an extended period after rhinoplasty. Patience is key, as the healing process takes time. Regular follow-ups with your surgeon will help ensure that your recovery is on track and that any concerns are addressed promptly.
