Follow-up after gonorrhea treatment?

About two weeks ago, I noticed pus coming from my urethral opening, so I immediately went to see a doctor.
A bacterial culture was performed, and initially, the doctor diagnosed me with urethritis.
I was prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics for a week, and I was told to return the following week to test for gonorrhea.
After a week, the urine test confirmed gonorrhea.
The doctor said I needed an injection and prescribed eight antibiotics to take all at once.
I received the injection (which was very painful) and took the medication.
After the injection, the pus from my urethral opening has stopped, but after taking eight antibiotics, I experienced multiple episodes of diarrhea that day.
Will this affect the efficacy of the medication?
Additionally, even though it has been five days since the pus has stopped and urination no longer causes pain, I still experience pain during morning erections.
I also feel pain when I try to masturbate, and my penis cannot achieve full erection; it feels somewhat pulled.
Could this indicate that there are still bacteria remaining in the urethra, or is it just psychological? How can this be effectively treated?

It typically returns to normal a few weeks later without affecting the efficacy of the medication.

It sounds like you've been through quite a challenging experience with your recent diagnosis and treatment for gonorrhea. It's understandable to have concerns about your symptoms and recovery, especially after receiving a diagnosis that can be both physically and emotionally taxing. Let's address your questions and provide some insights into what you might expect moving forward.

First, regarding the treatment you received: gonorrhea is typically treated with a combination of antibiotics, which may include an injection and oral medications. The injection you received is likely a form of ceftriaxone, which is effective against gonorrhea. The oral antibiotics you took (possibly azithromycin or doxycycline) are also used to ensure that the infection is fully eradicated. It's common to experience side effects from antibiotics, including diarrhea, as they can disrupt the normal flora of your gut. This side effect does not typically affect the efficacy of the antibiotics used to treat gonorrhea, but it’s important to stay hydrated and monitor your symptoms.

Now, regarding your ongoing symptoms: the absence of discharge and pain during urination is a positive sign that the infection may be resolving. However, the pain you are experiencing during erections and masturbation could be due to several factors. It’s possible that the urethra is still healing from the infection, which can cause discomfort. Additionally, psychological factors such as anxiety about the infection or its treatment can also contribute to physical symptoms, including pain during sexual arousal.

It's important to note that while the antibiotics should effectively clear the infection, some individuals may experience lingering symptoms even after treatment. This can be due to inflammation or irritation in the urethra, which may take time to resolve. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you notice any new symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to conduct further tests to ensure that there is no residual infection or other underlying issues.

In terms of recovery, most individuals start to feel better within a week or two after completing their antibiotic regimen. However, complete healing can take longer, especially if there was significant inflammation. It's crucial to avoid sexual activity until you have fully recovered and have been cleared by your doctor to prevent reinfection or transmission.

To support your recovery, consider the following:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to help flush out your system and support overall health.

2. Rest and Recovery: Allow your body time to heal. Avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate discomfort.

3. Follow-Up Care: Schedule a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and any concerns you may have. They can provide reassurance and further evaluation if necessary.

4. Mental Health: If you find that anxiety about your condition is affecting your well-being, consider speaking with a mental health professional. They can help you work through any fears or concerns related to your diagnosis and treatment.

In summary, while your symptoms may be concerning, they are not uncommon following treatment for gonorrhea. Monitor your symptoms closely, maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, and give yourself the time needed to heal. If you have any further questions or if your symptoms change, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance.
