Diarrhea with a foul odor?
Hello doctor, on Sunday after lunch, I had my first bowel movement, and the stool was deep yellow and odorless.
After dinner that evening, I had my second bowel movement, which was light yellow and had a foul smell.
I started to have a fever before going to bed.
The next day, I woke up feeling very full with no appetite and had continuous belching.
I went to see a doctor and was prescribed medication for gastroenteritis, but I am still experiencing diarrhea and belching, with no appetite.
The stool is light yellow and has a sour smell.
Could this really be gastroenteritis? I have no other symptoms.

More Info
Based on your description, it does seem likely that you are experiencing gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. The symptoms you mentioned, including watery diarrhea with a sour odor, fever, and loss of appetite, are commonly associated with this condition. Gastroenteritis can be caused by various factors, including viral infections (like norovirus or rotavirus), bacterial infections (such as Salmonella or E. coli), or even food poisoning from contaminated food or water.
The presence of watery, light yellow diarrhea with a sour smell can indicate that your body is trying to expel irritants or pathogens from your gastrointestinal tract. The sour odor may be due to the fermentation of undigested food or the presence of certain bacteria that produce gas as they break down food in your intestines. The fever is a typical response of your immune system to infection, as your body tries to fight off the invading pathogens.
It's important to note that gastroenteritis can lead to dehydration, especially if diarrhea persists. Symptoms of dehydration include increased thirst, dry mouth, reduced urine output, dizziness, and fatigue. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's crucial to increase your fluid intake, preferably with oral rehydration solutions that contain electrolytes, to help replenish lost fluids and salts.
In terms of treatment, the primary approach for gastroenteritis is supportive care. This includes staying hydrated, resting, and gradually reintroducing bland foods as your appetite returns. Over-the-counter medications may help alleviate symptoms, but they should be used cautiously. For instance, medications like loperamide (Imodium) can reduce diarrhea but may not be advisable if there's a high fever or blood in the stool, as they can prolong the infection.
If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or if you develop severe abdominal pain, blood in your stool, or signs of dehydration, it's essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform tests to identify the specific cause of your gastroenteritis and determine if any specific treatment is necessary, such as antibiotics for bacterial infections.
In summary, while your symptoms are consistent with gastroenteritis, it's essential to monitor your condition closely. Ensure you stay hydrated, rest, and consult a healthcare professional if your symptoms do not improve or if you experience any concerning signs.
