Lower abdominal issues?
Since high school, I have often experienced a popping sound near my lower abdomen, close to the bladder, as well as a loud gurgling noise.
Additionally, because I often hold in gas, there are times when I hear sounds near my buttocks without actually passing gas.
This has been a long-standing concern for me, and I would really like to find a solution.
Thank you.

Dr. Xu Kaixi reply Surgery
The sounds in the lower abdomen are more likely to be caused by intestinal peristalsis.
If accompanied by other discomfort, it is advisable to visit a surgical or gastroenterology clinic for examination.

More Info
Lower abdominal sounds, often described as bubbling or gurgling noises, can be a common and sometimes concerning experience. These sounds are typically caused by the movement of gas and fluid through the intestines, a process known as peristalsis. In your case, the sounds you are experiencing near the bladder area could be attributed to several factors, including digestive processes, dietary habits, and even stress.
Causes of Lower Abdominal Sounds
1. Intestinal Motility: The intestines are constantly moving to push food, gas, and waste through the digestive tract. This movement can create sounds, especially when gas is present. If you often hold in gas (as you mentioned about "憋屁"), it can lead to increased pressure and sounds as the gas is forced through the intestines.
2. Dietary Factors: Certain foods can contribute to gas production and digestive sounds. Foods high in fiber, such as beans, lentils, and certain vegetables, can lead to increased gas. Carbonated beverages can also introduce gas into the digestive system, leading to more pronounced sounds.
3. Swallowing Air: Eating too quickly or talking while eating can cause you to swallow air, which can accumulate in the intestines and lead to gurgling sounds.
4. Gastrointestinal Disorders: While less common, persistent or loud abdominal sounds accompanied by discomfort could indicate underlying gastrointestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastrointestinal infections, or even food intolerances.
5. Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors can also play a role. Stress can affect digestion and lead to increased intestinal activity, resulting in more noticeable sounds.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Dietary Adjustments: Consider keeping a food diary to identify any specific foods that may be contributing to your symptoms. Gradually reduce the intake of gas-producing foods and see if there is an improvement. Incorporating more easily digestible foods may help.
2. Eating Habits: Try to eat slowly and mindfully. Chewing food thoroughly and avoiding talking while eating can help minimize the amount of air swallowed.
3. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can aid digestion and help reduce gas buildup. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day, and consider herbal teas that can soothe the digestive tract.
4. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can promote healthy digestion and reduce gas buildup. Activities like walking, yoga, or stretching can be particularly beneficial.
5. Stress Management: If you suspect that stress is contributing to your symptoms, consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga. These practices can help calm the mind and improve digestive function.
6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it may be beneficial to consult a gastroenterologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including physical examinations and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any underlying conditions.
7. Probiotics: Incorporating probiotics into your diet may help balance gut bacteria and improve digestion. Foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables are good sources of probiotics.
In conclusion, while lower abdominal sounds can be a normal occurrence, understanding their causes and implementing some lifestyle changes can help alleviate your concerns. If symptoms persist or are accompanied by pain or other gastrointestinal issues, seeking medical advice is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment.
