There is a hard lump in the armpit?

A few days ago, I developed a bump under my armpit that resembles a pimple or a small nail.
Initially, it was a bit painful when I rubbed against it, but after two days, the pain subsided.
However, I can still feel a hard lump inside, approximately the size of a coin.

Qing, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/12/17

Dr. Chen Sirong reply Oncology

Q: There is a lump inside! The lump is about the size of a one-dollar coin.

A: It is likely a lymph node, but it is not possible to determine whether it is malignant or benign.
I recommend seeing a breast surgeon to examine the breast and axillary lymph nodes.
Wishing you good health and well-being.

More Info

Understanding hard lumps in the armpit can be concerning, especially when they appear suddenly and change in sensation over time. Based on your description, it sounds like you may have developed a lump that initially caused some pain but has since become painless, leaving you with a hard mass about the size of a coin. There are several potential causes for such lumps in the armpit area, and understanding these can help you determine whether further medical evaluation is necessary.

Possible Causes of Hard Lumps in the Armpit
1. Lymphadenopathy: One of the most common causes of lumps in the armpit is swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or malignancies. If you have had any recent infections (like a cold or skin infection), this could explain the lump.

2. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts are non-cancerous lumps that can form under the skin. They are often filled with a thick, oily substance and can feel firm to the touch. These cysts can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and discomfort.

3. Lipomas: These are benign tumors made of fat tissue. They are usually soft, movable, and painless. However, they can sometimes feel firm depending on their size and location.

4. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can lead to the formation of abscesses, which may present as painful lumps. If the lump was initially painful and then became painless, it could have been an abscess that has begun to drain or resolve.

5. Hidradenitis Suppurativa: This is a chronic skin condition that causes lumps in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits. These lumps can be painful and may recur.

6. Malignancies: While less common, it is important to consider that lumps can also be a sign of cancer, particularly lymphomas or metastasis from other cancers. This is especially a concern if the lump persists, grows, or is associated with other symptoms like unexplained weight loss, fever, or night sweats.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that the lump has changed in sensation and size, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider, especially if:
- The lump persists for more than a couple of weeks.

- It grows in size or changes in shape.

- You experience other symptoms such as fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

- You notice any changes in the skin over the lump, such as redness, warmth, or discharge.

Diagnostic Approach
A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the lump further. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to determine the nature of the lump, especially if there is a concern for malignancy.

Conclusion
While many causes of hard lumps in the armpit are benign, it is essential to monitor the lump and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. Early evaluation can help rule out serious conditions and provide peace of mind. Remember, your health is paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
