Bright white light in the outer part of the right eye... lasting for nearly 20 minutes!

Hello, doctor! Six months ago, while driving, I suddenly experienced a white light blocking my right eye's outer side for about half an hour, but it returned to normal afterward.
I didn't think much of it at the time because I often have migraines, so I just took some painkillers.
Today, while at work, it happened again! The same white light on the outer side of my right eye lasted for 20 minutes.
I would like to ask which department I should consult, doctor?

Wang, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/12/26

Experiencing flashing lights in your vision, particularly if it occurs suddenly and repeatedly, can be concerning and warrants a thorough evaluation. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a phenomenon known as "photopsia," which refers to the perception of flashes of light. This can occur for various reasons, and understanding the underlying cause is crucial for determining the appropriate course of action.

Given your history of experiencing these flashes in your right eye, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as headaches or visual disturbances, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist specializes in eye health and can conduct a comprehensive examination to assess the health of your eyes, including checking for any potential issues with the retina or other structures within the eye.

The sudden appearance of flashing lights can be associated with several conditions, including:
1. Vitreous Detachment: As we age, the vitreous gel that fills the eye can shrink and pull away from the retina, leading to flashes of light. This is often benign but can sometimes lead to more serious conditions.

2. Retinal Tear or Detachment: Flashes of light can also indicate a tear or detachment of the retina, which is a more serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include a sudden increase in floaters or a shadow in your peripheral vision.

3. Migraine Aura: Some individuals experience visual disturbances, including flashing lights, as part of a migraine aura. This can occur even in individuals who do not have a headache.

4. Other Neurological Issues: In some cases, flashing lights can be related to neurological conditions, so it's essential to rule out any underlying issues.

Since you mentioned that this has happened more than once and lasted for a significant duration, it is important not to dismiss these symptoms. While it may be tempting to attribute them to a headache or other benign causes, the recurrence and nature of the flashes suggest that a professional evaluation is warranted.

When you visit the ophthalmologist, they will likely perform a series of tests, including a visual acuity test, a dilated eye exam, and possibly imaging studies like optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a detailed view of the retina and vitreous. This thorough examination will help identify any potential issues and guide the appropriate treatment if necessary.

In summary, if you are experiencing flashing lights in your right eye, especially if it is recurrent, you should schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Early detection and intervention are key to preventing potential complications, particularly if there is a risk of retinal detachment or other serious conditions. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your eye health.
