Postoperative bleeding after hemorrhoid surgery?
Hello Doctor, I had hemorrhoid surgery on Friday, and the doctor mentioned it was a thrombosis.
I'm not sure if it's an external or internal hemorrhoid.
I have the following questions:
1.
It has been 3 days post-surgery, but there is still slight bleeding from the anal wound (I consistently use gauze at the anal area, and there is a small amount of blood when I change the gauze).
Is this normal?
2.
I have had a bowel movement once since the surgery, and it wasn't very painful (just a little discomfort), but I experience slight stinging when sitting down or standing up, seemingly from the gauze touching the wound.
When can I expect this pain to subside?
3.
The doctor advised me to rest and limit sitting and lying down, but due to work obligations, I may need to stand and walk for extended periods.
Will this significantly affect the healing of the wound? Thank you, Doctor!

Post-surgery bleeding after hemorrhoid surgery is a common concern, especially within the first few days following the procedure. It's important to understand what to expect during the recovery process and how to manage any symptoms that may arise.
1. Bleeding After Surgery: It is not uncommon to experience slight bleeding or spotting from the surgical site in the days following hemorrhoid surgery. If you are noticing a small amount of blood on the gauze when you change it, this can be considered normal, especially within the first few days post-operation. However, if the bleeding becomes heavy or is accompanied by other symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, or fever, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately. They may want to assess the situation to rule out any complications such as infection or excessive bleeding.
2. Pain Management: The pain you are experiencing, particularly when sitting or standing, is also a typical part of the recovery process. The surgical site is still healing, and any movement can cause discomfort as the area is sensitive. Generally, pain should gradually decrease over time. Most patients find that significant discomfort subsides within a week or two, but this can vary depending on individual healing rates and the extent of the surgery. If the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult your doctor for further evaluation and possible pain management strategies.
3. Activity Level and Healing: Regarding your concern about standing and walking due to work obligations, it is essential to strike a balance between activity and rest. While light activity can promote circulation and healing, excessive standing or strenuous activity can put additional strain on the surgical site and potentially delay healing. It is advisable to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding activity levels. If you must stand for extended periods, try to take breaks to sit down and rest whenever possible. Additionally, using supportive cushions when sitting can help alleviate pressure on the affected area.
Additional Care Tips:
- Diet: Maintaining a high-fiber diet and staying hydrated can help prevent constipation, which is crucial after hemorrhoid surgery. Straining during bowel movements can exacerbate pain and lead to complications.
- Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Gentle cleansing with warm water after bowel movements can help, and avoiding harsh soaps or irritants is recommended.
- Follow-Up: Ensure you attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They can monitor your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.
In summary, while some bleeding and discomfort are normal after hemorrhoid surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any significant changes or have concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Your recovery is important, and taking the right steps can help ensure a smoother healing process.
