Post-circumcision care
Hello, doctor.
I am following up on issue #142068.
It has been a month since my last inquiry, and currently, the pain on both sides of the base of the penis has subsided.
I underwent a circumcision on November 1, and it has now been two months, but I still have some questions regarding my current condition:
1.
The skin from the top of the penis to the circumcision sutures still feels sharp pain when touched.
2.
The area around the sutures also feels sharp pain when touched.
3.
During the day, the glans and the surrounding skin naturally hang down and come into contact with the scrotum.
After a while, they tend to stick together, and when I separate them while urinating, I experience a sharp pain.
4.
After showering, the glans and surrounding skin become sticky as they dry out, and when I touch them and then release, the sharp pain intensifies.
Questions:
1.
In your previous response, were you referring to the sutures still having an open wound?
2.
Will these four conditions only improve gradually over time?
3.
If so, approximately how long does it typically take?
4.
How will the skin in the area from the top of the penis to the circumcision sutures change over time?
5.
Does keratinization of the glans mean that the skin will gradually become rougher?
6.
Will erections or masturbation affect the healing of the skin and the sutures?
I have attached images of my current condition for reference.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello: 1) There will be wounds all around the surgical sutures.
2) It takes some time; if it is very painful, it is advisable to return for a follow-up.
3) Clinically, 1-2 months is necessary, depending on individual constitution.
4) It should be about the same, not changing too much, but it will likely become smoother.
5) It is relatively less tender.
6) If it occurs within two weeks post-surgery, it is possible; if it is two months later, it should not happen.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision recovery can be a complex process, and it's understandable that you have concerns about pain and healing. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some lingering discomfort and sensitivity in the area surrounding the circumcision site. Let's address your questions and provide some insights into the healing process.
1. Understanding Pain and Sensitivity: The pain you are experiencing, particularly when touching the area around the circumcision site, is not uncommon. After circumcision, the skin and underlying tissues undergo a healing process that can involve inflammation and sensitivity. The stitches (if used) can also contribute to discomfort as they dissolve or are absorbed by the body. The sensation of pain or "stinging" when touching the area may indicate that the nerves are still healing and that the skin is sensitive.
2. Healing Timeline: Generally, the healing process after circumcision can take several weeks to a few months. While the outer skin may appear healed, the deeper tissues may still be recovering. It's important to note that individual healing times can vary based on factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. In your case, since it has been two months, it is reasonable to expect gradual improvement, but some sensitivity may persist for a while longer.
3. Changes in Skin Texture: As the healing progresses, the skin around the circumcision site may undergo changes. Initially, it may appear red or inflamed, but over time, it should become less sensitive and return to a more normal color and texture. The term "keratinization" refers to the process where the skin becomes thicker and tougher due to the accumulation of keratin, a protein that helps protect the skin. This can lead to a rougher texture, which is a normal part of the healing process.
4. Impact of Activities: Engaging in activities such as masturbation or sexual intercourse can potentially affect the healing process, especially if there is still sensitivity or if the area is not fully healed. It's advisable to be cautious and avoid any activities that cause pain or discomfort until you feel more comfortable. If you experience significant pain during these activities, it may be best to wait until the area has healed more completely.
5. Managing Discomfort: To alleviate some of the discomfort you are experiencing, consider the following tips:
- Gentle Care: Be gentle when cleaning the area. Use mild soap and avoid harsh scrubbing.
- Moisturization: Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer may help reduce dryness and irritation.
- Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear to minimize friction and irritation against the sensitive area.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may help manage discomfort, but consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication.
6. Follow-Up with Your Doctor: If the pain persists or worsens, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess the healing process and determine if any further intervention is needed.
In summary, while some discomfort and sensitivity are normal during the healing process after circumcision, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns. Healing can take time, and patience is key. With proper care and attention, you should gradually notice improvement in your symptoms.
