Lymph node issues?

Hello, doctor.
A little over a month ago, I had an illness that included mild fever (38 degrees Celsius), tonsillitis, pharyngitis with swelling and pain, and night sweats.
During my illness, I noticed a raised red spot on the right side of my neck that resembled a mosquito bite.
After recovering, the swelling in that area did not subside.
Recently, after a physical examination by an ENT specialist, I was informed that it is a lymph node, approximately 1 cm in diameter, movable, and painless, and I was advised to monitor it without too much concern.
However, a week after the consultation, I discovered another small lump on the right side, which also appears to be a lymph node, less than 1 cm in diameter and painless.
Based on my situation, do I need to go to a major hospital for further examination?

Hello: If the number of lymph nodes continues to increase or if they persistently enlarge, it is recommended to visit a hospital for relevant examinations.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced a recent illness characterized by mild fever, tonsillitis, and throat inflammation, which may have contributed to the enlargement of your lymph nodes. The presence of a palpable lymph node in the neck, especially after an infection, is not uncommon. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to various reasons, including infections, inflammatory conditions, or malignancies.

In your case, the initial lymph node that was noted to be about 1 cm in size and was described as movable and non-tender is reassuring. The fact that it has not decreased in size after your illness is something to monitor, but it does not immediately indicate a serious problem. The additional smaller lymph node that has appeared is also something to keep an eye on, especially since it is less than 1 cm and also non-tender.

When to Seek Further Evaluation
1. Duration and Size: If the lymph nodes remain enlarged for more than 2-4 weeks without any signs of improvement, it is advisable to seek further evaluation. Persistent lymphadenopathy can sometimes warrant additional investigation.

2. Change in Characteristics: If you notice any changes in the lymph nodes, such as an increase in size, firmness, tenderness, or if they become fixed to the surrounding tissue, these could be signs that further evaluation is needed.

3. Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, night sweats, persistent fever, or fatigue, these could be indicators of a more serious condition and should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider.

4. Number of Nodes: The appearance of multiple lymph nodes can also be a reason for concern, especially if they are in different regions (e.g., neck, axilla, groin).

Recommended Next Steps
Given your situation, it would be prudent to follow up with a healthcare provider, particularly if the lymph nodes do not decrease in size or if you develop new symptoms. A visit to a larger hospital or a specialist in hematology or oncology may be warranted for further evaluation. Diagnostic imaging, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, may be recommended to assess the lymph nodes more thoroughly. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to rule out malignancy, especially if there are concerning features.

Conclusion
While your current symptoms and the characteristics of the lymph nodes may not be alarming, it is essential to remain vigilant. Monitoring the situation and seeking further evaluation if necessary is a wise approach. Always trust your instincts; if you feel something is not right, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and early intervention can often lead to better outcomes if any issues arise.
