Post-fistula surgery
Hello Doctor, I had a fistula surgery on January 23rd.
I have been soaking in the bath 4 to 5 times a day and changing the dressing as well.
It has been two weeks now.
Is it normal to experience pain and itching? Also, is it normal for the area around the wound to feel hard? There is no discharge or bleeding.
Thank you, Doctor.

It is normal to experience swelling and pain at the wound site after fistula surgery.
Complete recovery typically takes about a month, and as long as there is no infection or bleeding, there is no cause for concern.

More Info
After undergoing fistula surgery, it is common to experience pain and itching during the healing process. These sensations can be attributed to several factors related to the body's natural healing response. Pain is often a result of tissue trauma from the surgery itself, and as the body heals, inflammation can occur, leading to discomfort. Itching, on the other hand, is typically associated with the healing of skin and underlying tissues, as nerve endings regenerate and the body begins to repair itself.
In your case, since you are two weeks post-surgery and are actively engaging in wound care by taking sitz baths and changing dressings regularly, it is a positive sign that you are taking steps to promote healing. The absence of discharge or bleeding is also encouraging, indicating that there may not be an active infection. However, the presence of hardness around the wound site can be a normal part of the healing process as well. This hardness may be due to scar tissue formation or localized swelling, which can occur as the body lays down new tissue.
It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain becomes severe, or if you notice any signs of infection such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate the wound to ensure that it is healing appropriately and to rule out any complications.
In terms of managing pain and itching, there are several strategies you can consider:
1. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate discomfort. If your pain is more severe, your doctor may prescribe stronger pain medication.
2. Itching Relief: To manage itching, you can try applying a cold compress to the area, which can help soothe the skin. Additionally, keeping the area moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion may help reduce dryness and irritation.
3. Wound Care: Continue with your sitz baths as they can promote cleanliness and comfort. Ensure that you are changing your dressings as advised by your healthcare provider to keep the area clean and dry.
4. Avoiding Irritants: Be cautious with any products you apply to the area, as fragrances or harsh chemicals can exacerbate itching and irritation.
5. Follow-Up Appointments: Make sure to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can assess your healing progress and provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
In summary, experiencing pain and itching after fistula surgery can be normal, especially as the body goes through the healing process. The hardness around the wound may also be a typical part of recovery. However, it is essential to remain vigilant for any signs of complications and to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding your symptoms and concerns. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
