Bowel issues
I have recently noticed that my stools have become thinner and smaller (about the size of a pinky finger), and sometimes they are loose and watery.
My intake of fruits and vegetables has decreased lately, and I also feel a lack of appetite (although I still eat).
What could be the cause of this?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
At the age of 14, this phenomenon is often related to gastrointestinal function issues.
It is recommended to maintain a normal diet and increase the intake of dietary fiber to support gut microbiota, which should be beneficial.

Changes in bowel movements can be concerning, especially when they deviate from your normal patterns. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing thinner and sometimes watery stools, along with a decreased appetite. These changes can be attributed to several factors, including dietary habits, stress, and potential gastrointestinal issues.
Firstly, let's discuss the dietary aspect. You mentioned a decrease in your intake of fruits and vegetables. A diet low in fiber can lead to changes in stool consistency. Fiber is essential for maintaining healthy bowel movements as it adds bulk to the stool and helps it pass more easily through the intestines. When fiber intake is insufficient, stools can become thinner or more liquid, as the digestive system may not have enough material to form well-structured stools. It is advisable to gradually increase your fiber intake by incorporating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes into your diet. This can help improve stool consistency and promote regular bowel movements.
Additionally, you noted experiencing a lack of appetite. While this may not seem directly related to your bowel movements, appetite changes can indicate underlying issues such as stress, anxiety, or gastrointestinal disturbances. Stress, in particular, can significantly affect gut health and lead to symptoms like changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, and altered appetite. If you are experiencing increased stress or anxiety, it may be beneficial to explore stress management techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or talking to a mental health professional.
Another consideration is the possibility of gastrointestinal conditions. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infections, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can lead to changes in bowel habits, including thinner stools and diarrhea. If you notice persistent changes in your bowel movements, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like abdominal pain, weight loss, or blood in the stool, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend tests such as stool analysis, blood tests, or imaging studies to rule out any underlying conditions.
In the meantime, here are some practical steps you can take to address your symptoms:
1. Increase Fiber Intake: Aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes in your diet. Gradually increase your fiber intake to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort.
2. Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day, as hydration is essential for healthy digestion.
3. Monitor Your Diet: Keep a food diary to track what you eat and how it affects your bowel movements. This can help identify any specific foods that may be contributing to your symptoms.
4. Manage Stress: Engage in activities that promote relaxation and reduce stress, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies that you enjoy.
5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If your symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.
In summary, changes in bowel movements can be influenced by various factors, including diet, stress, and potential gastrointestinal issues. By making dietary adjustments, managing stress, and seeking medical advice when necessary, you can work towards restoring normal bowel function and overall digestive health.
