Foul odor of menstrual blood?

I took emergency contraception on February 7, and my period started on February 14.
At first, the color was dark, which I know is normal, but the flow is light, and even on February 20, it is still ongoing.
It seems like it’s not going to stop.
Is this normal? Additionally, I noticed a foul odor that is becoming increasingly strong and very pungent.
I've never experienced this before, and it’s quite frightening.
The color is still dark brown, the flow is light but persistent.
I used a cotton swab to check inside my vagina, and what I pulled out was dark and extremely foul-smelling.
I’m really worried.
What could be happening?

Hello, it has been ongoing since February 20th, and it seems like it hasn't shown any signs of stopping.
The amount appears to be significant, and there is a foul odor, which could indicate inflammation.
It is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding unpleasant menstrual odors can be concerning, especially when accompanied by unusual symptoms such as prolonged bleeding and changes in color. In your case, it appears that you are experiencing a combination of factors following the use of emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill") and the onset of your menstrual period.

Firstly, it is important to note that the use of emergency contraception can lead to changes in your menstrual cycle. This includes variations in the timing, flow, and characteristics of your period. It is not uncommon for women to experience heavier or lighter bleeding, as well as changes in color (such as darker or brownish blood) after taking such medication. The darker color often indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus, which is generally considered normal.

However, the presence of a strong, unpleasant odor, especially if it is described as "very pungent," raises some concerns. A foul odor can sometimes indicate an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Bacterial vaginosis, in particular, is characterized by an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria, which can lead to a fishy odor and changes in discharge. Other potential causes of an unpleasant odor could include retained menstrual products (like tampons), which can lead to toxic shock syndrome (TSS), or other infections.

Given that you mentioned using a cotton swab to check for abnormalities and found a strong odor, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam, and may take samples for laboratory testing to determine if there is an underlying infection or other issue that needs to be addressed.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
1. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina: This includes cotton swabs, as they can irritate the vaginal walls and potentially introduce bacteria.

2. Maintain good hygiene: Regularly changing menstrual products and keeping the genital area clean can help reduce odors.

3. Monitor your symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or changes in discharge, as these can provide important information to your healthcare provider.

4. Seek medical advice: Given the persistence of your symptoms and the presence of a strong odor, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional as soon as possible. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your needs.

In summary, while some changes in menstrual flow and color can be normal after taking emergency contraception, the presence of a strong, unpleasant odor is a sign that warrants further investigation. It is essential to prioritize your health and seek medical advice to ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
