Bowel irregularities

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing some issues with my bowel movements over the past week.
Since a bout of diarrhea a week ago, I've felt a persistent urge to have a bowel movement every day, but the amount is small.
The stools are either thin and elongated or small and pellet-like, with a clay-yellow color and mixed with a lot of mucus.
Additionally, there have been a few instances where passing gas has also expelled mucus, and I've been feeling bloated in the lower abdomen.
I'm concerned that I might have colon cancer...

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

At the age of 20, the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer is not zero, but generally speaking, it is extremely low.
Based on your description, it seems more like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
It is recommended to maintain a light diet and a good lifestyle routine.
Spicy, irritating, and greasy foods should be avoided, and increasing dietary fiber intake can also be beneficial.
If symptoms persist without improvement, you may consult a physician for medication or to undergo a colonoscopy.

Abnormal bowel movements can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as diarrhea, changes in stool shape, and the presence of mucus. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that may indicate an underlying gastrointestinal issue.
Firstly, let's break down the symptoms you mentioned:
1. Diarrhea: This can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections (viral, bacterial, or parasitic), food intolerances, stress, or even certain medications. Since you mentioned that the diarrhea started after a specific episode, it could be related to an infection or irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.

2. Stool Characteristics: The fact that your stools are thin and small, along with the presence of mucus, is noteworthy. Normal stool should be well-formed and brown in color. Thin stools can sometimes indicate a narrowing of the bowel, which can be caused by inflammation, infection, or even more serious conditions such as colorectal cancer. However, it's essential to note that the presence of mucus can also be a sign of irritation in the intestines, which can occur with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

3. Abdominal Bloating: This symptom can accompany many gastrointestinal disorders, including IBS, infections, or food intolerances. Bloating often results from gas buildup in the intestines or from the intestines not functioning properly.

4. Anxiety About Cancer: It's understandable to be concerned about serious conditions like colorectal cancer, especially with changes in bowel habits. However, many benign conditions can cause similar symptoms.
Given these symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend several diagnostic tests, including:
- Stool Tests: To check for infections, blood, or other abnormalities.

- Blood Tests: To assess for signs of infection, inflammation, or other underlying conditions.

- Imaging Studies: Such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan, to visualize the intestines and check for any structural abnormalities.

- Colonoscopy: If deemed necessary, this procedure allows direct visualization of the colon and can help identify any lesions, inflammation, or other issues.

In the meantime, consider keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any associated symptoms. This can help identify potential food intolerances or triggers. Staying hydrated is also essential, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea.

Lastly, while it is natural to worry about serious conditions, many gastrointestinal issues are manageable and treatable. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes, so seeking medical advice sooner rather than later is advisable.
In summary, while your symptoms warrant attention, they do not automatically indicate a severe condition like colorectal cancer. A healthcare provider can help clarify the situation and guide you toward appropriate treatment options.
