Constantly feeling sleepy?

Hello doctor, I often feel very sleepy and after getting enough sleep, I want to sleep again in about 3 hours.
I sleep more than 7 hours every day, but sometimes when I go to bed too late, I wake up feeling nauseous and wanting to vomit.
What could be causing this? Also, what is the relationship between nausea and vomiting? Should I undergo any specific tests?

Ms. Chen, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/03/02

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

A blood test can be performed to check liver function.

Constant fatigue and nausea can be distressing symptoms that significantly impact your daily life. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing excessive sleepiness, even after getting a sufficient amount of sleep, and you also feel nauseous, especially after waking up late. These symptoms can be indicative of several underlying issues, and it’s essential to explore them further.

Firstly, let’s address the fatigue. Persistent fatigue can stem from various causes, including sleep disorders, mental health issues, medical conditions, or lifestyle factors. Conditions such as sleep apnea, where breathing is interrupted during sleep, can lead to poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness. Other sleep disorders, like narcolepsy, can also cause sudden bouts of sleepiness. Additionally, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety can manifest as fatigue, where individuals may feel tired despite adequate sleep due to the emotional toll these conditions take.

On the other hand, the nausea you experience upon waking can be linked to several factors. It could be related to your eating habits, such as not eating enough or consuming heavy meals before bedtime, which can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort. Conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis can also cause nausea, especially in the morning. Furthermore, anxiety and stress can lead to physical symptoms, including nausea, as they can affect your digestive system.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation. They may recommend several tests to rule out potential underlying conditions. Blood tests can help assess your overall health, including checking for anemia, thyroid function, and other metabolic issues. A sleep study may be necessary if a sleep disorder is suspected. Additionally, an evaluation of your mental health could provide insights into whether anxiety or depression is contributing to your symptoms.

In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track your sleep patterns, dietary habits, and any other symptoms you experience. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing your condition. Additionally, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, practicing good sleep hygiene, and managing stress through relaxation techniques or therapy can be beneficial.

In summary, while constant fatigue and nausea can be linked to various factors, it is crucial to seek professional medical advice to determine the underlying cause. A thorough evaluation will help guide appropriate treatment and management strategies tailored to your specific needs. Remember, addressing both physical and mental health aspects is vital for achieving overall well-being.
