Discharge after sexual intercourse?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask, after my period ended on March 7, I had unprotected intercourse on March 10, but there was no ejaculation.
The next day, I noticed a clear and stretchy discharge, but it only lasted for one day.
Is it possible that this indicates ovulation and could lead to pregnancy?

Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/03/17

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Ms.
Huang: The discharge you described may be ovulatory discharge.
If you are really concerned, you can take emergency contraceptive pills within seven days, but it is best to do so within two days.

Understanding the potential for pregnancy after unprotected sex, particularly during the ovulation period, is crucial for anyone who is sexually active. In your case, you mentioned having unprotected sex on March 10, shortly after your menstrual period ended on March 7. You also noted the presence of clear, stretchy discharge the following day, which is often associated with ovulation.

To address your question, it is important to understand the timing of ovulation in relation to your menstrual cycle. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period in a standard 28-day cycle. However, cycles can vary significantly among individuals, and factors such as stress, illness, or hormonal changes can affect ovulation timing. The clear, stretchy discharge you observed is a common sign of ovulation, as it indicates the presence of fertile cervical mucus, which helps sperm travel through the reproductive tract.

Regarding the risk of pregnancy, while you did not experience ejaculation during intercourse, it is important to note that pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm. Although the concentration of sperm in pre-ejaculate is generally lower than in ejaculate, there is still a possibility of pregnancy if sperm are present. If you were indeed ovulating at the time of unprotected intercourse, the chances of conception could be higher.

In your situation, since you had unprotected sex during a time when you might have been ovulating, there is a possibility of pregnancy, albeit it may be lower than if ejaculation had occurred. If you are concerned about the risk of pregnancy, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test if your period is late. Most tests are reliable about a week after a missed period.

Additionally, if you are actively trying to avoid pregnancy, consider discussing contraceptive options with a healthcare provider. There are various methods available, including hormonal contraceptives, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and barrier methods, each with its own effectiveness and suitability based on individual health needs.

In summary, while the presence of clear, stretchy discharge suggests you may have been ovulating, the risk of pregnancy from unprotected sex without ejaculation is still present due to the potential for sperm in pre-ejaculate. Monitoring your menstrual cycle and being aware of your body's signs can help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health. If you have further concerns or questions, consulting with a healthcare professional is always a good step for personalized advice and guidance.
