Post-operative issues following septoplasty?

Hello, doctor.
I recently underwent a minimally invasive septoplasty.
Since my follow-up appointment has not yet arrived, I would like to ask you a few questions here.
How long after the surgery can I blow my nose? Also, is it safe to sleep on my side now, and will side sleeping affect the results of the surgery? Thank you.

Hsuan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/03/20

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: It is generally recommended to avoid blowing your nose for one week after surgery to minimize the risk of bleeding from the nasal wounds.
As for sleeping on your side, it typically does not affect the surgical outcome.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

After undergoing a septoplasty, it is essential to follow specific post-operative care guidelines to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated septum, which can improve airflow through the nasal passages and alleviate symptoms such as nasal obstruction, snoring, and sinus infections. Here are some recovery tips and advice to address your concerns:

Recovery Timeline
1. Nasal Discharge: After septoplasty, it is common to experience some nasal discharge, including mucus and blood-tinged fluid. Generally, you can start blowing your nose gently about one week post-surgery, but it is crucial to avoid forceful blowing for at least two weeks. This is to prevent any disruption to the surgical site and to allow proper healing.

2. Sleeping Position: It is advisable to avoid sleeping on your side for at least two weeks following the surgery. Side sleeping can put pressure on the healing nasal passages and may affect the surgical results. Instead, try to sleep on your back with your head elevated using pillows. This position helps reduce swelling and promotes better airflow.

General Post-Operative Care
- Pain Management: You may experience some discomfort after the surgery. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage pain. Always follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding medication.

- Nasal Care: Keep your nasal passages moist to promote healing. Your doctor may recommend saline nasal sprays or rinses. Avoid using any products that may irritate the nasal lining, such as decongestants or antihistamines, unless prescribed.

- Avoid Strenuous Activities: For at least two weeks post-surgery, refrain from heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or any activities that may increase blood pressure in the head. This includes bending over or straining, which can lead to bleeding.

- Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. They will assess your healing progress and remove any splints or packing if necessary.

- Watch for Complications: Be vigilant for signs of complications, such as excessive bleeding, severe pain, fever, or signs of infection (e.g., increased redness, swelling, or discharge). If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Additional Considerations
- Hydration and Nutrition: Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your recovery. Foods rich in vitamins C and K can be particularly beneficial for healing.

- Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications. It is best to avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption during your recovery period.

- Patience is Key: Healing from septoplasty can take time. While many patients notice improvements in their breathing shortly after surgery, complete recovery may take several weeks to months. Be patient and give your body the time it needs to heal.

In summary, after septoplasty, it is crucial to manage your recovery carefully. Avoid blowing your nose for at least a week, refrain from side sleeping for two weeks, and follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice. Your recovery is important, and taking the right steps can lead to a successful outcome.
