Symptoms After Septoplasty Surgery

Hello Dr.
Cheng, I had a septoplasty surgery last Friday.
I would like to ask about some symptoms I've been experiencing.
The day after the surgery, I started feeling dizzy, and whenever I don't focus my eyes, I experience a blurry sensation, almost like I'm very sleepy.
Today is the fourth day, and I feel like I'm improving day by day.
Is this normal? Thank you.

Wei Yihong, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/03

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Dear Mr.
Wei,
Hello, it is possible that the side effects of the oral antihistamine medication may be causing drowsiness or dizziness.
You may consider temporarily discontinuing the medication.
If you continue to feel unwell, please return to the outpatient clinic for further evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

After undergoing a septoplasty, it is not uncommon to experience a range of post-operative symptoms, including dizziness and visual disturbances. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors related to the surgery and the body's healing process.

Firstly, septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated septum, which can improve airflow through the nasal passages. Post-operative symptoms can vary widely among individuals, but some common experiences include nasal congestion, mild pain or discomfort, swelling, and sometimes, dizziness. The dizziness you are experiencing could be due to a few reasons:
1. Anesthesia Effects: The use of general or local anesthesia during the procedure can lead to temporary dizziness or lightheadedness as the body metabolizes the anesthetic agents. This is usually short-lived and should improve as the anesthesia wears off.

2. Nasal Congestion: After surgery, it is typical for patients to experience swelling and congestion in the nasal passages. This can lead to a feeling of pressure in the head, which may contribute to dizziness or a sensation of being off-balance.

3. Changes in Blood Pressure: Post-operative recovery can sometimes lead to fluctuations in blood pressure, especially if you are less active than usual. This can also cause feelings of dizziness.

4. Dehydration or Fatigue: If you have been less active or not drinking enough fluids post-surgery, you might feel fatigued or dizzy. It's essential to stay hydrated and rest adequately during your recovery.

Regarding the visual disturbances you mentioned, such as blurriness when not focusing, this could also be related to fatigue or strain from the surgery. It is essential to give your body time to heal, and as you noted, it seems to be improving day by day, which is a positive sign.

However, while some dizziness and visual changes can be normal, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the dizziness worsens, persists beyond a reasonable time, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as severe headache, persistent nausea, or changes in consciousness, you should seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of complications that need further evaluation.

In summary, experiencing dizziness and visual disturbances after septoplasty can be normal, particularly in the early days of recovery. It is encouraging to hear that your symptoms are improving. Make sure to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, stay hydrated, and rest adequately. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms do not continue to improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. They can provide reassurance and ensure that your recovery is on track.
