Olfactory issues after septoplasty?
In late November 2021, I underwent septoplasty along with the removal of nasal polyps.
About a month after the surgery, I noticed that I couldn't smell anything from the left side of my nose, although my breathing was clear.
Could this be due to inadequate post-operative care?

Hello, if the surgery was solely for the nasal septum, there typically should not be any issues with smell afterward.
It is advisable to follow up with the original surgeon to discuss any concerns.

Post-surgery smell issues, particularly after a septoplasty and polypectomy, can be concerning for many patients. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience changes in their sense of smell following nasal surgery. This can be attributed to several factors related to the surgical procedure, healing process, and individual variations in recovery.
Firstly, during septoplasty, the nasal septum is straightened, and any obstructive tissue, such as polyps, is removed. While these procedures aim to improve airflow and alleviate symptoms like nasal congestion, they can also temporarily affect the olfactory function. The olfactory receptors, which are responsible for the sense of smell, are located in the upper part of the nasal cavity. If there is swelling, inflammation, or crusting in this area post-surgery, it can hinder the ability to detect odors.
In your case, experiencing a loss of smell in the left nostril while still having unobstructed breathing could indicate that the olfactory pathways are still healing. The healing process can take time, and it is not unusual for patients to report changes in their sense of smell for weeks or even months after surgery. Additionally, if there is any residual crusting or scarring in the nasal passages, it may further contribute to the altered smell perception.
Another important aspect to consider is the potential for post-operative complications, such as infection or the formation of excessive scar tissue (adhesions), which can also impact olfactory function. If you have not been following up with your ENT specialist for post-operative care, it is advisable to do so. Regular follow-ups can help ensure that any issues such as crusting or inflammation are addressed promptly, which may improve your sense of smell.
In terms of self-care, maintaining nasal hygiene is crucial. Using saline nasal sprays or rinses can help keep the nasal passages moist and clear of crusts, which may facilitate better healing and potentially restore your sense of smell. Additionally, some patients find that using a humidifier can help alleviate dryness in the nasal passages, promoting healing.
If your sense of smell does not improve over time, or if you experience other symptoms such as persistent nasal obstruction, discharge, or pain, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, which could include imaging studies or a nasal endoscopy to assess the nasal cavity's condition.
In summary, post-surgery smell issues after septoplasty and polypectomy can be due to a variety of factors, including healing processes, nasal crusting, and potential complications. It is essential to maintain good nasal hygiene and follow up with your ENT specialist for ongoing evaluation and management. With time and appropriate care, many patients experience a return to normal olfactory function.
