Deviated septum
I had a septoplasty surgery on February 29, along with nasal valve reconstruction and inferior turbinate reduction.
Since the surgery, my nose has remained congested.
I haven't smoked or consumed alcohol, and I've been resting at home.
I also rinse my nose every morning and evening, and each time I rinse, I notice yellowish-green secretions.
Is it normal for my nose to still be congested after such a long time?

More Info
After undergoing nasal septum deviation surgery, also known as septoplasty, along with turbinate reduction, it is common to experience a variety of symptoms during the recovery period. Your concerns about persistent nasal congestion and the presence of yellow-green discharge are valid and warrant further discussion.
Understanding Post-Surgery Symptoms
1. Nasal Congestion: It is not unusual for patients to experience nasal congestion for several weeks following surgery. The nasal passages can be swollen due to the surgical trauma, and it may take time for the swelling to subside. Additionally, the healing process can lead to the formation of crusts and mucus, which can contribute to the sensation of blockage.
2. Discharge: The yellow-green discharge you are experiencing could indicate a few things. While some mucus production is normal as your body heals, the color and consistency of the discharge can sometimes suggest an infection. In the absence of other symptoms such as fever or significant pain, it may simply be part of the healing process. However, if the discharge persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult your ENT specialist.
3. Nasal Irrigation: You mentioned that you are performing nasal irrigation daily. This is a beneficial practice post-surgery as it helps to keep the nasal passages moist, clear out mucus, and reduce crusting. However, be cautious not to overdo it, as excessive irrigation can irritate the nasal mucosa.
Recovery Timeline
Typically, the initial healing phase after nasal surgery can last from a few weeks to a couple of months. During this time, you may notice fluctuations in your symptoms. Here’s a general timeline:
- First Week: Expect significant swelling and some bleeding. Congestion is common, and you may have a feeling of pressure in your face.
- Weeks 2-4: Swelling should begin to decrease, but congestion may persist. Discharge may still be present, and you might notice changes in its color.
- Weeks 4-6: By this time, many patients start to feel relief from congestion as healing progresses. However, some residual symptoms can linger.
When to Seek Help
If your nasal congestion does not improve after several weeks, or if you experience:
- Increased pain or pressure in the sinuses
- A persistent fever
- A significant change in the color or odor of the discharge
- Difficulty breathing through your nose
You should reach out to your ENT specialist. They may perform an examination, possibly including nasal endoscopy, to assess the healing process and rule out any complications such as infection or the need for further intervention.
Conclusion
In summary, while some degree of nasal congestion and discharge is expected after nasal septum deviation surgery, persistent symptoms beyond the typical recovery timeline should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Your proactive approach to nasal care through irrigation is commendable, and maintaining open communication with your surgeon will help ensure a smooth recovery. Remember, every individual’s healing process is unique, and it’s essential to listen to your body and seek guidance when needed.
