Menstruation has not yet arrived, only brown discharge?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my situation.
My period did not come at the beginning of January, so I received a menstrual induction injection around January 15-16, and my period started then.
After that, my menstrual cycle in February was normal and ended around February 20.
On March 9, I had sexual intercourse, and when I didn't see my period by March 18, I thought I would wait another week.
However, around March 22, I noticed brown discharge when I went to the bathroom, which had a blood-like smell, so I thought my period was coming.
This continued until March 28, but I still hadn't experienced heavy bleeding, just a little that occasionally stained my underwear.
Today, March 29, I bought a pregnancy test, and it clearly showed one line.
I also feel a slight dull pain in my abdomen.
Could this mean my period is about to come, or is there another issue? I'm a bit worried because the brown discharge before my period has not lasted this long.
I would appreciate your guidance!

Hui, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/03/29

Thank you for your inquiry.
Based on your description, it seems there may be an issue with hormonal imbalance, which could be due to factors such as anovulation or stress.
I recommend that you visit a gynecologist for a clinical examination to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

Understanding brown discharge before menstruation can be a common concern for many individuals. In your case, the timeline you've provided indicates a few key points that can help clarify what might be happening.

Firstly, brown discharge often occurs when there is old blood that is being expelled from the body. This can happen at the beginning or end of a menstrual cycle, and it is typically not a cause for concern. The brown color indicates that the blood has taken longer to exit the uterus, which is why it appears darker. In your situation, the brown discharge you observed from March 22 to March 28 could be a sign that your period is approaching, especially since you mentioned that it has a blood-like smell.

The fact that you had a normal menstrual cycle in February and then experienced a delay in March could be attributed to several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, or changes in your routine. After having sexual intercourse on March 9, it is also possible that your body is reacting to the hormonal changes that can occur after sexual activity.

Regarding the pregnancy test you took on March 29, a single line typically indicates that you are not pregnant. However, if you are experiencing symptoms such as abdominal discomfort or persistent brown discharge, it is essential to monitor your body closely. If your period does not arrive within a few days, or if the symptoms worsen, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In some cases, brown discharge can be associated with other conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, polyps, or even early signs of pregnancy, although your test suggests otherwise. If you have a history of irregular cycles or if this brown discharge continues beyond your expected period, it may warrant further investigation.

In summary, the brown discharge you are experiencing could very well be a precursor to your menstrual cycle. However, if you have any concerns about your reproductive health or if the symptoms persist, it is always best to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly additional tests, to ensure everything is functioning normally. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don’t hesitate to reach out for professional guidance.
