Ear pain accompanied by a sensation of emptiness or coolness in the ears during deep breathing?
The main issue is that I have pain in my left ear.
I have already seen an otolaryngologist who told me that my ear is slightly inflamed and gave me some ointment to apply.
However, I would like to ask why sometimes when I take a deep breath, I feel a cool sensation in my left ear, as if there is air in it, while my right ear does not have this sensation.
Is this a cause for concern?

Typically, Eustachian tube dysfunction improves within two weeks after the resolution of inflammation.
If symptoms do not resolve, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngology clinic.
Wishing you good health.

Ear pain and unusual sensations, especially during deep breathing, can be concerning and may indicate underlying issues that require further evaluation. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing discomfort primarily in your left ear, accompanied by a sensation of coolness or air movement during deep breaths. This can be attributed to several factors, including inflammation, eustachian tube dysfunction, or even referred pain from other areas.
When you mention that an ENT specialist diagnosed you with mild inflammation and prescribed a topical ointment, it suggests that there may be some localized irritation or infection in the ear canal or the outer ear. However, the sensation of coolness or air in the left ear, especially when compared to the right ear, raises some questions about the function of the eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. This tube helps equalize pressure in the ear and drains fluid. If it is not functioning properly, it can lead to sensations of fullness, pressure, or even pain.
Eustachian tube dysfunction can occur due to various reasons, including allergies, sinus infections, or even changes in altitude. When you take a deep breath, the pressure changes in your chest can affect the pressure in your ears, especially if the eustachian tube on the left side is not opening adequately. This could explain the sensation of air or coolness in that ear. Additionally, if there is any inflammation or blockage in the eustachian tube, it may lead to a feeling of discomfort or pain.
Another possibility is that the pain and unusual sensations could be related to referred pain from other structures in the head and neck. The ear is closely connected to the throat and nasal passages, and issues in these areas can manifest as ear pain. For instance, if you have any sinus congestion or inflammation, it could lead to pressure changes that affect your ear.
Given that you have already seen an ENT specialist, it may be beneficial to follow up if your symptoms persist or worsen. You might want to ask for further evaluation, such as a tympanometry test, which assesses the function of the eustachian tube and the middle ear. Additionally, imaging studies like a CT scan could be considered if there is suspicion of structural issues or chronic sinus problems.
In the meantime, there are some self-care measures you can try to alleviate your symptoms. These include:
1. Nasal Decongestants: If you suspect that nasal congestion is contributing to your ear discomfort, over-the-counter decongestants may help relieve pressure.
2. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear can help soothe pain and promote drainage.
3. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam can help open up the eustachian tubes and relieve pressure.
4. Yawning or Swallowing: These actions can help open the eustachian tubes and equalize pressure in the ears.
5. Avoiding Irritants: If allergies are a factor, try to avoid known allergens and consider using antihistamines if appropriate.
If your symptoms continue or if you experience additional symptoms such as hearing loss, dizziness, or severe pain, it is crucial to seek further medical attention. Persistent ear pain and unusual sensations should not be ignored, especially if they interfere with your daily activities or quality of life.
