Issues around the lips?

I would like to ask about a small wound near my lips (around the area between my mustache and upper lip) where I previously had a pimple that I squeezed.
Recently, there is a small bump in that area, and I impulsively squeezed it, resulting in a tiny wound (which is not red or swollen).
I would like to know what methods or ointments can be used for disinfection or to aid in healing.
Since that area is easily exposed to food, I am hesitant to use regular ointments there.

Xiao Ke, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/04/22

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Yes, but a prescription can only be issued after a physician's examination.

When dealing with skin issues around the lip area, especially after popping a pimple, it's essential to approach treatment with care. The skin in this region is delicate and can be prone to irritation and infection. Here are some effective treatments and recommendations for healing skin issues in this area:
1. Keep the Area Clean: The first step in treating any skin injury is to keep the area clean. Use a gentle, non-irritating cleanser to wash the area twice a day. Avoid harsh soaps or scrubs that can exacerbate irritation.

2. Use Antiseptic Creams: After cleaning the area, applying an antiseptic ointment can help prevent infection. Products containing ingredients like bacitracin or neomycin can be effective. However, be cautious with the application, as you mentioned that the area is close to the mouth, and ingestion of these products should be avoided. Always check the product label for safety.

3. Hydration and Moisturization: Keeping the skin hydrated is crucial for healing. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer or a healing ointment like Aquaphor or Vaseline. These products create a barrier that locks in moisture and protects the skin from further irritation. They are generally safe to use around the mouth, but ensure that you apply them sparingly to avoid ingestion.

4. Avoid Picking or Squeezing: It’s vital to resist the urge to pick at any scabs or bumps that may form as the area heals. Picking can lead to further irritation, potential scarring, and even infection.

5. Consider Over-the-Counter Treatments: If you notice any signs of inflammation or if the area becomes red and swollen, you might consider using a topical hydrocortisone cream for a short duration to reduce inflammation. However, this should be done cautiously and not for extended periods, especially in sensitive areas.

6. Natural Remedies: Some people find relief using natural remedies like aloe vera gel, which has soothing properties and can help with healing. Ensure that any product you use is pure and free from additives that could irritate the skin.

7. Avoid Irritants: Be mindful of any products that may come into contact with the area, such as lip balms, cosmetics, or even toothpaste. Opt for hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products to minimize the risk of irritation.

8. Consult a Dermatologist: If the area does not improve within a few days or if you notice any signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, or pain), it’s essential to consult a dermatologist. They can provide more targeted treatments, such as prescription topical antibiotics if necessary.

9. Sun Protection: If you are going outdoors, protect the area from sun exposure, as UV rays can worsen pigmentation and irritation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, but again, be cautious about the formulation to avoid ingestion.

In summary, healing skin issues around the lip area requires a gentle approach. Keeping the area clean, using appropriate antiseptics, maintaining hydration, and avoiding irritants are key steps. If the condition persists or worsens, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to ensure proper care and treatment.
