Whether a medication causes weight gain as a side effect?
Hello Doctor, I am a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) characterized by intrusive thoughts.
The physician mentioned that I am on the verge of experiencing delusions of persecution, so I have been prescribed the following medications: 1.
Effexor XR 75mg extended-release capsules - one at bedtime 2.
Seroquel 50mg (Quetiapine) - two capsules twice a day (used for psychiatric purposes, not for gastrointestinal treatment) 3.
Klonopin 0.5mg - one at bedtime.
I am really afraid of gaining weight from these medications, and I couldn't find relevant information online.
I asked my attending physician, who said that treating the condition is more important, but I am genuinely scared.
Just the thought of gaining weight or noticing an increase in my weight makes me more anxious.
Therefore, I would like to ask the doctor if taking these medications could lead to weight gain.
Thank you for your kind response.
Xiao You, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/05/02
Dr. Huang Xiaoxian reply Psychiatry
Dear Xiao You,
I can see that you are quite anxious about the side effects of weight gain.
However, generally speaking, Sulpiride is not an antipsychotic medication that typically causes weight gain.
You are taking a low dosage of the medication (50 mg), while the standard dosage is 200 mg per tablet.
Therefore, even if you take four tablets a day, the total daily dose would be 200 mg, which should have minimal impact on your appetite and is unlikely to affect your weight significantly.
I recommend that you continue taking the medication as prescribed, monitor any changes in your appetite, and maintain a regular exercise routine.
You can discuss your concerns further with your physician during your next appointment.
Wishing you all the best!

When it comes to psychiatric medications and their potential impact on weight, it’s important to understand that different medications can have varying effects on weight gain or loss. In your case, you mentioned being prescribed three specific medications: Venlafaxine (Effexor), Sulpiride (Sulpiride), and Clonazepam (Klonopin). Let's break down the potential effects of these medications on weight.
1. Venlafaxine (Effexor): This medication is primarily used to treat depression and anxiety disorders. It can have a complex relationship with weight. Some patients report weight loss when they first start taking it, while others may experience weight gain over time. The weight changes can be influenced by factors such as changes in appetite, metabolism, and the underlying condition being treated. In general, Venlafaxine is not typically associated with significant weight gain compared to some other antidepressants.
2. Sulpiride (Sulpiride): This medication is an atypical antipsychotic that is sometimes used for treating schizophrenia and depressive disorders. Atypical antipsychotics are known to have a higher risk of weight gain compared to other classes of psychiatric medications. Sulpiride can lead to increased appetite and subsequent weight gain in some individuals. It’s essential to monitor your weight and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
3. Clonazepam (Klonopin): This medication is a benzodiazepine used for anxiety and seizure disorders. While it is not typically associated with weight gain, some individuals may experience changes in appetite or lifestyle factors that could indirectly affect weight. For example, if the medication helps reduce anxiety, you might find yourself more comfortable engaging in social activities, which could influence your eating habits.
Given your concerns about weight gain and its potential impact on your anxiety, it’s crucial to approach this situation holistically. Here are some recommendations:
- Open Communication with Your Doctor: It’s essential to maintain an open dialogue with your prescribing physician about your concerns regarding weight gain. They can provide you with tailored advice and may consider adjusting your medication if weight gain becomes a significant issue.
- Monitor Your Weight: Keep track of your weight regularly. If you notice significant changes, bring this up with your doctor. They might suggest strategies to manage your weight or consider alternative medications.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating healthy eating habits and regular physical activity can help mitigate potential weight gain. Even small changes, such as taking walks or choosing healthier snacks, can make a difference.
- Mental Health Support: Since anxiety about weight can exacerbate your condition, consider seeking support from a mental health professional. They can help you develop coping strategies for managing anxiety related to weight changes.
- Educate Yourself: Understanding the potential side effects of your medications can empower you to make informed decisions about your treatment. However, avoid relying solely on online information, as it can sometimes be misleading. Always consult your healthcare provider for accurate information.
In summary, while some psychiatric medications can lead to weight gain, the effects can vary widely among individuals. It’s crucial to address your concerns with your healthcare provider, monitor your weight, and adopt healthy lifestyle practices to help manage your overall well-being. Remember, the primary goal of treatment is to improve your mental health, and managing any side effects, including weight changes, is an important part of that process.
