Unexplained Cracks and Skin Growths on Inner Thighs: What to Know - Dermatology

There are several unexplained cracks and growths resembling granulation tissue on the inner sides of the thighs (groin area)?

Hello, doctor.
Since I can't show you a photo, I'll try to describe my situation as thoroughly as possible.
I have noticed some unexplained crack-like lines on the inner side of my thigh.
These cracks have developed some growths that resemble skin-colored granulation tissue, and they are not painful or itchy.
The appearance is somewhat linear, with two distinct rows on each side that are more pronounced, featuring the cracks with the granulation tissue on top.
When I touch them, I can feel a distinct texture that resembles something that has split and then been stitched back together.
Some of the lines appear to already have cracks.
(I am overweight, so I used my phone to take close-up photos for observation.) I also feel like there are some cracks that are not fully formed yet, along with the granulation tissue.
Recently, the nearby hospitals have been fully booked, so I will find time to see a doctor.
I would like to ask for your opinion on this condition first.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello: Based solely on the textual description, it is not possible to accurately diagnose a skin condition; one can only speculate whether it is "striae" (stretch marks).
If the skin symptoms do not improve or worsen, it is advisable to consult a nearby dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you!

The presence of unexplained cracks and skin growths on the inner thighs can be concerning, especially when accompanied by a description of "meat-like" growths. While I cannot provide a definitive diagnosis without a physical examination, I can offer some insights into potential causes and considerations based on your description.

Firstly, the cracks you are experiencing could be a result of several factors, including friction, skin irritation, or even a condition known as intertrigo. Intertrigo occurs in skin folds where moisture and friction can lead to inflammation and cracking of the skin. This is particularly common in individuals who are overweight or have skin folds, as the skin can rub against itself, leading to irritation. The presence of "meat-like" growths could be indicative of skin tags or fibromas, which are generally benign growths that can occur in areas of friction or irritation.

Another possibility is that the cracks and growths could be related to a fungal infection, particularly if the area is moist and warm. Fungal infections can lead to skin changes, including cracks, redness, and sometimes the formation of small growths. Conditions such as tinea cruris (commonly known as jock itch) can cause similar symptoms and are often exacerbated by heat and humidity.

It's also important to consider the role of skin hydration and overall skin health. Dry skin can lead to cracking, and if the skin is not adequately moisturized, it may become more susceptible to irritation and injury. Ensuring that the skin is well-hydrated with appropriate moisturizers can help mitigate some of these issues.

In terms of treatment, it is advisable to avoid any irritants or harsh soaps in the affected area. Gentle cleansing and the application of a moisturizer can help soothe the skin. If you suspect a fungal infection, over-the-counter antifungal creams may be beneficial, but it's best to consult with a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Given that you mentioned difficulty accessing a healthcare provider due to full appointments, I recommend seeking care as soon as possible. A dermatologist or primary care physician can provide a thorough examination and may perform a biopsy or other tests to determine the exact nature of the skin changes. This is crucial, especially if the symptoms persist or worsen.

In summary, while the cracks and growths on your inner thighs could be due to friction, irritation, or a benign skin condition, it is essential to have them evaluated by a healthcare professional. Early intervention can prevent complications and provide peace of mind. In the meantime, focus on keeping the area clean and moisturized, and avoid any potential irritants.
