Sensation of discomfort in the throat?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my child's recent throat discomfort.
They feel like there is a fishbone stuck in their throat, but I remember that this happened a long time ago.
Since there was no bleeding or other uncomfortable symptoms afterward, I didn't take them to see a doctor.
However, since then, they occasionally experience slight throat discomfort, feeling as if the fishbone is still lodged below the Adam's apple (in the throat area).
I would like to know if leaving a fishbone untreated for too long poses any life-threatening risks, or what might happen if we just leave it as is?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, the symptoms are more indicative of chronic pharyngitis.
Generally, if there is a fishbone lodged in the throat, it can often lead to pain during swallowing.
If not addressed, it may cause severe inflammation.
If the symptoms persist without improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation for confirmation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

If you have had a fish bone lodged in your throat for an extended period, it can potentially lead to complications, although the immediate danger may not be apparent. Fish bones can cause irritation, inflammation, or even infection in the throat or esophagus if they remain lodged for too long. The symptoms you describe, such as discomfort in the throat and a sensation of something being stuck, are common indicators that something may still be present or that there is inflammation in the area.
When a foreign object like a fish bone is swallowed, it can sometimes pass through the digestive tract without causing harm. However, if it gets stuck, it can lead to more serious issues. If the bone is sharp or pointed, there is a risk that it could perforate the esophagus or other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to severe complications such as internal bleeding or infection. This is particularly concerning if you experience symptoms like severe pain, difficulty swallowing, fever, or any signs of infection.
In your case, since you mentioned that you have not experienced any bleeding or severe symptoms, it is possible that the fish bone has either passed or is not causing significant harm at this time. However, the persistent discomfort you feel suggests that there may still be some irritation or inflammation in your throat, which could be due to the presence of the bone or another underlying issue.
It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the discomfort persists or worsens, or if you develop new symptoms such as fever, difficulty swallowing, or severe pain, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies or an endoscopy, to determine if the fish bone is still present and to assess any potential damage to your throat or esophagus.
In summary, while a long-standing fish bone in the throat can pose risks, the immediate danger may not be evident without further evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to foreign objects in the body. If you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare provider for a proper assessment and management plan. Your health and safety should always come first, and timely intervention can prevent more serious complications down the line.
