Post-Circumcision Pain: What to Expect After Surgery - Urology

Share to:

Hello, doctor!

I would like to ask the doctor, it has been a month and a half since my circumcision, and the wound is healing well.
However, when I have an erection, the wound area feels tight and slightly painful.
Is this due to the internal healing not being complete, even though the external part seems fine? I also notice that when I gently pinch the wound areas on both sides, it causes slight pain, but there is no pain at the front or back (the frenulum area).
I previously consulted with my doctor, who advised me to "get used to it." If this continues, will it affect my sexual activity in the future?

Mr. Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/05/07

Hello: Most patients experience pain after surgery, and the wound typically takes about two weeks to heal.
However, since the wound is in a sensitive and elastic area, there may be some discomfort.
Your main concern is that you need to wait a bit longer after the surgery; once the incision is made, the skin will be different, which may affect sexual activity.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision pain is a common concern for many individuals who have undergone this procedure. It is important to understand that healing after circumcision can vary significantly from person to person, and several factors can influence the recovery process.
In your case, it has been a month and a half since the surgery, and while the external wound appears to be healing well, you are experiencing discomfort during erections and some pain when touching the surgical site. This is not uncommon, as the internal tissues may still be healing, and sensitivity can persist for some time after the procedure.
During the healing process, the body undergoes several stages of recovery. Initially, there may be inflammation and swelling, which can cause discomfort. As the healing progresses, scar tissue forms, and the sensitivity of the area may change. It is possible that the pain you are experiencing during erections is due to the stretching of the healing tissues, which can feel tight or uncomfortable. This sensation may diminish as the tissues continue to heal and adapt to their new state.

The advice given by your physician to "get used to it" is a common recommendation. It suggests that over time, as you become more accustomed to the changes in your anatomy, the discomfort may lessen. However, if the pain persists or worsens, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to assess for any complications, such as scarring or adhesions, that could be contributing to your discomfort.

Regarding your concern about how this might affect sexual activity, it is crucial to communicate openly with your partner about your experiences. Many individuals find that as they heal, their comfort during sexual activity improves. However, if you continue to experience pain, it may be beneficial to explore alternative methods of intimacy that do not cause discomfort until you feel ready.

In addition to following your doctor's advice, consider implementing some self-care strategies to aid in your recovery. Gentle stretching exercises may help improve flexibility in the area, but be sure to avoid any activities that cause pain. Maintaining good hygiene is also essential to prevent infection, which can complicate healing.

If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge from the surgical site, or if the pain becomes severe, seek medical attention promptly. Your healthcare provider may recommend further evaluation or treatment options to address your concerns.

In summary, while some discomfort after circumcision is normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider about any persistent or worsening pain. With time and appropriate care, many individuals find that their discomfort decreases, allowing them to resume normal activities, including sexual intercourse, without pain.
