How should removable dentures be cleaned?

My father has lost all of his upper teeth for unknown reasons and has gotten dentures.
However, he never removes his dentures because he feels uncomfortable without them.
I would like to ask a doctor: 1.
Is it possible to not remove dentures at all? (There are various opinions online.) 2.
How should dentures be cleaned? Do they need to be removed for brushing? (My father has never taken his dentures out.)

Mi, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/06/03

Dr. Lin Jiayong reply Dentistry

Hello: 1.
Removable dentures must be removed before going to bed, as there can be a lot of food debris between the dentures and the gums.
It is essential to clean your mouth thoroughly at least before sleeping.
2.
For the dentures themselves, it is recommended to soak them in denture cleaning tablets (available in the market) and gently clean the surface with a soft-bristle toothbrush.
Do not soak them in water exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, as the plastic components of the dentures may become distorted.
Thank you!

Cleaning dentures properly is essential for maintaining oral health and preventing infections. It is important to address your questions regarding whether your father can leave his dentures in all the time and how to clean them effectively.

1. Can Dentures Be Worn Continuously?
While it may seem convenient for your father to keep his dentures in all the time, it is generally not recommended. Dentures should be removed at least once a day for cleaning and to give the gums a break. Continuous wear can lead to several issues, including:
- Bacterial Growth: Leaving dentures in for extended periods can create a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to infections or conditions such as denture stomatitis (inflammation of the tissues under the denture).

- Gum Irritation: Prolonged wear can cause irritation and soreness in the gums, as the tissues need time to recover from the pressure of the dentures.

- Bad Breath: Food particles and bacteria can accumulate under the dentures, leading to unpleasant odors.

Therefore, it is advisable for your father to remove his dentures daily, even if he feels uncomfortable doing so.

2. How to Clean Dentures?
Cleaning dentures is crucial for maintaining oral hygiene. Here are the recommended steps for cleaning dentures effectively:
- Remove the Dentures: Gently take out the dentures from your father's mouth. This should be done carefully to avoid damaging the dentures or causing discomfort.

- Rinse the Dentures: Rinse the dentures under lukewarm water to remove any loose food particles. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the dentures.

- Use a Denture Brush: Use a soft-bristled denture brush or a toothbrush specifically designed for dentures. Regular toothpaste should not be used, as it can be abrasive and scratch the surface of the dentures. Instead, opt for a non-abrasive denture cleaner or mild soap.

- Brush Thoroughly: Brush all surfaces of the dentures, including the inner and outer surfaces, as well as the areas that come into contact with the gums. Pay special attention to any crevices where food particles may be trapped.

- Soak the Dentures: After brushing, it is beneficial to soak the dentures in a denture cleaning solution or a mixture of vinegar and water for about 30 minutes. This helps to disinfect and remove any stubborn stains.

- Rinse Again: After soaking, rinse the dentures thoroughly under running water to remove any cleaning solution residue.

- Clean the Mouth: While the dentures are out, your father should also clean his mouth. He can brush his gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth to maintain oral hygiene.

- Store Properly: When not in use, dentures should be stored in a container filled with water or a denture solution to prevent them from drying out.

In conclusion, while your father may feel more comfortable wearing his dentures continuously, it is essential for his oral health to remove them daily for cleaning and to allow his gums to rest. Following the proper cleaning steps will help prevent infections, bad breath, and gum irritation, ensuring that his dentures remain in good condition and that his oral health is maintained. If your father continues to experience discomfort or has concerns about his dentures, it is advisable to consult with a dentist for further evaluation and guidance.
