Red spots can be treated with Longwei Skin Water-Soluble Ointment?

Hello doctor, previously I had small round spots on the glans of my penis.
I went to see a doctor who said it was not contagious and prescribed me Liniderm water-soluble ointment.
I experience pain and itching, but the small round spots do not cause any pain or itching, so I haven't applied the ointment until now.
The small round spots are still present and have not disappeared.
Could you please tell me what side effects this medication may have? I have seen that some people use it for phimosis.

Rl, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/09/08

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: Keep the area clean and dry.
After urination, make sure to dry the area.
Wear loose-fitting underwear, not too tight.
If you experience itching or pain, it may indicate an infection; you can apply an ointment.
For those with a tighter foreskin, this ointment can also be used, but it should be applied long-term, not just for a few days.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Lindelung Water-Soluble Ointment, also known as "臨得隆維膚水溶性軟膏," is a topical medication commonly used for various dermatological and urological concerns. It is particularly noted for its soothing properties and is often prescribed for conditions involving irritation or inflammation of the skin, including those affecting the genital area.

Mechanism of Action
The ointment typically contains ingredients that help to hydrate and protect the skin, promoting healing and reducing discomfort. It may also have mild anti-inflammatory properties, which can alleviate symptoms such as itching and irritation. The formulation is designed to be water-soluble, which means it can be easily washed off and does not leave a greasy residue, making it suitable for sensitive areas.

Indications
In your case, the ointment was prescribed for small round spots on the glans (the head of the penis) that were not causing pain or itching. While the doctor indicated that these spots are not infectious, the ointment may help to soothe the area and prevent any potential irritation from friction or other external factors. Additionally, some individuals use this ointment for conditions related to phimosis (tight foreskin) or other dermatological issues in the genital region.

Side Effects
As with any medication, there can be side effects, although they are generally mild. Common side effects of topical ointments may include:
1. Local Irritation: Some individuals may experience redness, itching, or a burning sensation at the application site. This is usually temporary and resolves after discontinuing use.

2. Allergic Reactions: Though rare, some people may develop an allergic reaction to one of the components in the ointment, leading to more severe symptoms such as swelling, rash, or hives. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to stop using the ointment and consult your doctor.

3. Increased Sensitivity: Prolonged use of topical medications can sometimes lead to increased sensitivity in the area, which may exacerbate discomfort rather than alleviate it.

Usage Recommendations
If the small round spots are not causing any pain or discomfort, it may not be necessary to apply the ointment unless advised by your healthcare provider. However, if you experience any irritation or if the spots change in appearance, it is crucial to follow up with your doctor for further evaluation.

Conclusion
In summary, Lindelung Water-Soluble Ointment is generally safe for use in the genital area and can be effective for soothing irritation. While side effects are possible, they are typically mild. If you have concerns about the ointment or the spots on your glans, it is best to discuss them with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding the use of any medication, and do not hesitate to seek further clarification if you have questions about your treatment.
