Lung issues

Hello doctor, I recently noticed that I feel short of breath while singing, and I sometimes experience a bit of trembling during that time.
I also find it easy to become breathless when walking or climbing stairs, and I feel a sense of chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
Additionally, I have been coughing at night (I have had a cold for almost two months).
Could this be simply due to poor lung capacity, or is there another issue?

Wang, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/12/20

Dr. Yang Wenda reply Pulmonology

Hello: Poor vital capacity should not cause coughing.
It is usually associated with bronchitis or bronchial allergies.
It is recommended to visit a pulmonology clinic nearby for consultation.

Breathing difficulties can be a concerning symptom, especially when they manifest during activities like singing, walking, or climbing stairs. Your experience of feeling breathless, chest tightness, and coughing at night, particularly after having a prolonged cold, suggests that there may be several underlying factors contributing to your symptoms.

Firstly, it’s important to consider the possibility of respiratory infections. If you’ve been experiencing a cold for nearly two months, it’s possible that you may have developed a secondary infection, such as bronchitis or even pneumonia. These conditions can lead to inflammation of the airways, increased mucus production, and ultimately, difficulty breathing. Persistent coughing, especially at night, can also indicate post-nasal drip or asthma exacerbation, particularly if you have a history of allergies or asthma.

Another factor to consider is your physical conditioning. If you have not been active recently, your lung capacity and overall cardiovascular fitness may have declined. This can lead to feelings of breathlessness during physical exertion, such as singing or climbing stairs. It’s essential to gradually increase your physical activity to improve your lung function and overall fitness. However, if the breathlessness persists or worsens, it’s crucial to seek medical advice.

Anxiety and stress can also play a significant role in breathing difficulties. If you find yourself feeling anxious or stressed, especially in situations where you are exerting yourself, this can lead to hyperventilation, which may cause feelings of breathlessness and even trembling. Learning relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or yoga, can help manage anxiety and improve your breathing.

Given your symptoms, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, lung function tests, and possibly imaging studies to assess your lungs and airways. If allergies are suspected, allergy testing may also be beneficial.

In summary, your breathing difficulties could stem from a combination of factors, including lingering effects of a respiratory infection, decreased physical fitness, and potential anxiety. It’s essential to address these symptoms proactively. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Schedule an appointment with a doctor to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may recommend tests to rule out infections or other respiratory conditions.

2. Increase Physical Activity: Gradually incorporate more physical activity into your routine. Start with light exercises and gradually increase intensity as your fitness improves.

3. Practice Breathing Techniques: Engage in deep breathing exercises to help manage anxiety and improve lung capacity. Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing can be particularly effective.

4. Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough fluids, as hydration can help thin mucus and ease coughing.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, noting any triggers or patterns. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.

6. Consider Allergy Management: If you suspect allergies may be contributing to your symptoms, discuss this with your doctor. They may recommend allergy testing or treatment options.

By taking these steps, you can work towards understanding and alleviating your breathing difficulties. Remember, it’s essential to listen to your body and seek medical advice if your symptoms persist or worsen.
