Menstrual issues

I am an international student and came to Taiwan to study in September.
I had my period until October, but since November, I haven't had my period until now.
I'm a bit worried.
P.S.: I'm definitely not pregnant!

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: Regarding the issue you raised, if you are certain there has been no sexual activity, it is possible that stress is causing anovulation.
It is recommended to visit an obstetrics and gynecology clinic for examination and treatment.
The Hualien Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare cares about your health.

Menstrual irregularities can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially for international students who may be adjusting to new environments, lifestyles, and stressors. In your case, since you have experienced a regular menstrual cycle until November and have since missed your period, it is understandable that you might feel anxious. However, it is important to consider various factors that could contribute to this change.

Firstly, stress is a significant factor that can affect menstrual cycles. Moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, and managing academic pressures can all lead to increased stress levels. Stress can disrupt the hormonal balance in your body, which may result in delayed or missed periods. It is essential to find ways to manage stress, such as engaging in physical activity, practicing mindfulness or meditation, and ensuring you have a support system in place.

Secondly, changes in diet and lifestyle can also impact your menstrual cycle. If you have altered your eating habits or physical activity levels since arriving in Taiwan, this could contribute to irregularities. For instance, significant weight loss or gain, changes in exercise routines, or even dietary changes can influence your hormonal balance. It is advisable to maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients and to engage in regular physical activity to support overall health.

Additionally, hormonal imbalances can be a cause of menstrual irregularities. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to missed periods. If you have a history of such conditions or if you experience other symptoms (like excessive hair growth, acne, or weight changes), it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

Another consideration is the impact of travel and time zone changes. If you traveled to Taiwan from a different time zone, the disruption of your circadian rhythm could also affect your menstrual cycle. It may take some time for your body to adjust to the new schedule.

If you are certain that pregnancy is not a concern, and if your period does not return in the next few months, it would be wise to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly blood tests, to rule out any underlying health issues. They can also provide guidance on managing menstrual irregularities and ensuring your reproductive health is maintained.

In summary, while it is common for menstrual cycles to fluctuate due to various factors, it is crucial to pay attention to your body and any accompanying symptoms. Managing stress, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking medical advice when necessary can help you navigate this situation. Remember, you are not alone in this experience, and there are resources available to support you during your studies in Taiwan.
