It feels like my ear is hearing a sound similar to bubbles popping?

This morning, shortly after I woke up, I started hearing strange sounds near my ear.
These sounds last for about ten seconds before disappearing, but they return again shortly after, sometimes feeling like they are coming from my head (though I'm not sure).
So far, I've observed that these sounds occur approximately 7-9 times an hour.
I've been trying to describe this sound and I think it resembles the subtle sound of soap bubbles popping.
This has continued from this morning until around 3 PM this afternoon.
I would like to know what this issue might be and whether I should consult a neurologist or an ear specialist.

Dr. Jiang Junyi reply Neurology

Hello: It is recommended to investigate your issue starting from the ears towards the brain.
This will help rule out problems such as Eustachian tube dysfunction or instability of the auditory nerve cells.
It is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist to discuss examination and treatment options.
Wishing you good health, peace, and happiness.

The experience of hearing unusual sounds in the ear, such as a bubbling noise, can be concerning and may stem from several underlying causes. Based on the symptoms you've described, it is essential to consider a few potential explanations.

1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: One of the most common reasons for hearing popping or bubbling sounds in the ear is Eustachian tube dysfunction. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure in the ear. When this tube does not function properly, it can lead to a sensation of fullness, popping, or bubbling sounds, especially when swallowing or yawning. This dysfunction can be triggered by allergies, colds, or sinus infections, which can cause inflammation and blockage.

2. Middle Ear Issues: Conditions such as otitis media (middle ear infection) can also lead to abnormal sounds in the ear. Fluid accumulation behind the eardrum can create a sensation of pressure and may produce sounds similar to bubbling or popping. If you have experienced any recent upper respiratory infections or allergies, this could be a contributing factor.

3. Earwax Buildup: Excessive earwax can block the ear canal and lead to various auditory sensations, including bubbling or crackling sounds. If earwax is pressing against the eardrum, it can cause discomfort and unusual noises when you move your head or when there are changes in pressure.

4. Tinnitus: While tinnitus is often described as a ringing or buzzing sound, some individuals report hearing bubbling or popping noises. Tinnitus can be caused by exposure to loud noises, ear infections, or other underlying health conditions. It is essential to note that tinnitus can sometimes be a symptom of more serious issues, so it should not be overlooked.

5. Muscle Spasms: In some cases, spasms of the muscles in the middle ear can create unusual sounds. This condition, known as myoclonus, can lead to rhythmic sounds that may be perceived as bubbling or clicking.

Given the frequency and persistence of the sounds you are experiencing, it is advisable to seek medical attention. You should consider visiting an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) rather than a neurologist. An ENT specialist can perform a thorough examination of your ears, including checking for any blockages, infections, or other abnormalities. They may also conduct hearing tests to assess your auditory function.

In the meantime, try to avoid inserting objects into your ear or using cotton swabs, as this can push earwax further into the ear canal and potentially worsen the situation. If you have any accompanying symptoms, such as pain, dizziness, or hearing loss, make sure to mention these to your healthcare provider, as they can provide valuable information for diagnosis and treatment.

In conclusion, while the bubbling noise in your ear may not be immediately alarming, it is essential to address it with a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, especially if the issue is related to Eustachian tube dysfunction or an ear infection.
