Tympanic membrane vibration? Pulsatile sound?
Is it normal to hear a popping sound near the junction of my cheek and ear, just below the ear, when I press on it? This only happens in my left ear; my right ear is fine.
Previously, I felt like there was fluid moving in both ears, especially noticeable when lying on my side.
After examining my hearing and ear pressure, the doctor said everything was normal and diagnosed me with post-nasal drip, prescribing antihistamines.
Is there a connection between post-nasal drip and the popping sound I feel when I touch below my ear?

Hello, if the cause is unclear and the physician finds no obvious abnormalities upon examination, you may start with self-observation.
Wishing you peace and good health.

More Info
The sensation of a bubbling or popping sound in the ear, particularly when pressing on the area where the cheek meets the ear, can be concerning, especially when it occurs in only one ear. This phenomenon may be related to several factors, including the function of the Eustachian tube, the presence of fluid in the middle ear, or even the effects of allergies or sinus issues.
When you mention that you feel a bubbling sound in your left ear and that you previously experienced a sensation of fluid movement, it raises the possibility of Eustachian tube dysfunction. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure in the ear. If this tube is not functioning properly, it can lead to pressure imbalances, which may cause sounds like bubbling or popping, especially when you manipulate the area around your ear.
The fact that your doctor has ruled out any significant issues with your hearing and ear pressure is reassuring. However, the mention of "nasal drip" or post-nasal drip suggests that there may be an underlying issue related to your sinuses or nasal passages. Allergies can cause inflammation and increased mucus production, which can lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ears. When mucus drains down the back of the throat, it can also affect the Eustachian tube's ability to function properly, leading to sensations of bubbling or pressure changes in the ear.
In your case, the use of antihistamines or other allergy medications prescribed by your doctor may help alleviate these symptoms by reducing nasal congestion and inflammation. It is also essential to stay hydrated and consider using saline nasal sprays to keep your nasal passages moist, which can help with drainage and reduce the feeling of pressure in your ears.
If the bubbling sound persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as pain, hearing loss, or dizziness, it would be prudent to follow up with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They may perform further evaluations, such as tympanometry, to assess the function of your Eustachian tubes and check for any fluid accumulation in the middle ear.
In summary, while the bubbling sound you experience may be related to Eustachian tube dysfunction or post-nasal drip, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and maintain communication with your healthcare provider. Addressing any underlying allergies or sinus issues may significantly improve your ear symptoms and overall comfort.
