Feeling uncomfortable after using ear drops?
I have a slight ear inflammation, and the doctor prescribed me ear drops (similar to eye drops).
Is it normal to hear a bubbling sound, like something is splashing around inside? I've also been experiencing tinnitus in that ear.
On the other side, I hear a sound similar to water trapped in my ear after swimming.
Is this normal too? I've only used one or two drops.

More Info
It is not uncommon to experience discomfort after using ear drops, especially if there is an underlying condition such as inflammation or infection in the ear. The sensation you describe, where you hear a "blooping" sound or feel as if something is moving inside your ear, can be attributed to several factors related to the anatomy and physiology of the ear.
When you apply ear drops, they can mix with any fluid already present in the ear canal, which may create a sensation of movement or bubbling. This is particularly true if there is inflammation or fluid buildup due to an infection, as the ear canal may be more sensitive and reactive to changes in pressure or fluid dynamics. The sound you hear could also be related to the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. If this tube is not functioning properly, it can lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, as well as sounds that resemble water sloshing around.
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can also occur in conjunction with ear drops, especially if there is inflammation or irritation in the ear. This condition can be exacerbated by various factors, including exposure to loud noises, earwax buildup, or even stress. If you are experiencing persistent tinnitus, it is advisable to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
The sensation of water in the ear, similar to what you might feel after swimming, can also be a result of fluid trapped in the ear canal or middle ear. This can happen if the Eustachian tube is blocked or not functioning properly, which can occur due to allergies, sinus infections, or even changes in altitude. If you have recently experienced any upper respiratory infections or allergies, this could contribute to the feeling of fullness or pressure in your ears.
In summary, while some discomfort and unusual sensations after using ear drops can be normal, especially in the context of ear inflammation or infection, it is important to monitor your symptoms. If the discomfort persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, significant hearing loss, or discharge from the ear, you should seek medical attention. An ENT specialist can perform a thorough examination, possibly including hearing tests and imaging if necessary, to determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.
In the meantime, you can try to alleviate some of the discomfort by performing gentle maneuvers to equalize ear pressure, such as swallowing, yawning, or gently blowing your nose while pinching your nostrils shut (the Valsalva maneuver). However, avoid inserting anything into your ear canal, as this can exacerbate irritation or lead to further complications.
