The ear is blocked by Meikang ear drops?
Hello, Doctor.
A few days ago, I had a blocked ear and visited a physician who diagnosed it as excessive earwax.
After cleaning the outer part, my hearing returned to normal, but I was still prescribed a bottle of ear drops to soften the earwax for a follow-up cleaning.
After using the drops, my ear became blocked again (as if it were filled with water), and now I feel very uncomfortable.
What should I do?

Hello: It is possible that deeper earwax may expand after using ear drops, causing a feeling of fullness or blockage.
It is recommended to wait until after completing the three days of medication before returning to the clinic for cleaning.
Wishing you good health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Dealing with ear blockage after using ear drops can be quite uncomfortable and concerning. It’s important to understand the situation and take appropriate steps to alleviate the discomfort.
Firstly, it’s not uncommon for ear drops, especially those designed to soften earwax, to cause a temporary sensation of blockage. This can happen if the earwax absorbs the liquid and expands, or if the drops cause some residual moisture that creates a feeling of fullness in the ear. Here’s what you can do:
1. Self-Care at Home: If you’re experiencing a sensation of fullness or blockage after using the ear drops, you might want to try a few home remedies. One common method is to use a warm compress. Applying a warm cloth to the outside of your ear can help to soften the wax further and may encourage it to move out of the ear canal. Additionally, you can try tilting your head to the side and gently pulling on your earlobe to help the drops work their way down.
2. Avoid Inserting Objects: It’s crucial to avoid using cotton swabs or any other objects to try to remove the wax yourself. This can push the wax further into the ear canal and potentially cause damage or lead to infection.
3. Hydration: Staying hydrated can help thin mucus and may assist in the overall health of your ear canals. Drinking plenty of fluids is beneficial for your body and can help with ear health.
4. Follow-Up Appointment: Since your doctor has already seen you for earwax issues, it’s advisable to return for a follow-up appointment if the blockage persists. The doctor can perform a thorough examination and safely remove any impacted earwax. They may also check for any signs of infection or other underlying issues that could be causing your discomfort.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any additional symptoms. If you experience pain, discharge, or a significant decrease in hearing, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of an infection or other complications.
6. Consider Over-the-Counter Options: If you feel comfortable, you might consider using over-the-counter ear drops designed for earwax removal. However, consult with your healthcare provider before trying any new treatments, especially if you have a history of ear problems.
7. Patience is Key: Sometimes, the sensation of blockage can resolve on its own as the earwax naturally works its way out. If you are not experiencing pain or significant discomfort, it may be worth waiting a few days to see if the situation improves.
In summary, while it can be uncomfortable to deal with ear blockage after using ear drops, there are several steps you can take to alleviate the situation. If symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment. Your ear health is important, and professional guidance can ensure that any issues are addressed safely and effectively.
