Ear drops clogged the entire ear?
A few days ago, I went to see an otolaryngologist due to severe ear pain and was diagnosed with otitis media.
The doctor prescribed ear drops for me.
After applying the drops, I wanted to let them drain out after 10 minutes, and a little bit came out.
The next day, my ear felt completely blocked by the medication, and I can hardly hear what others are saying.
What should I do about this? Will the medication dry up on its own?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, it may be caused by the mixing of the medication with secretions in the ear canal.
If discomfort persists, it is advisable to return for an earlier consultation.
The physician can provide localized treatment to improve the condition.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When dealing with ear drops, especially after treatment for conditions like otitis media (middle ear infection), it's important to understand how to properly administer the drops and manage any residual fluid in the ear. Based on your description, it seems that after applying the ear drops, you experienced a sensation of blockage in your ear, which can be quite uncomfortable and concerning.
First, it's essential to recognize that ear drops are designed to penetrate the ear canal and reach the affected area. After instilling the drops, it is common to feel a sensation of fullness or pressure as the medication takes effect. This sensation can sometimes be exacerbated by the presence of fluid in the ear canal, which may occur if the drops do not fully drain out.
Here are some steps you can take to manage the situation:
1. Allow Time for Absorption: After applying ear drops, it's generally recommended to keep your head tilted to the side for a few minutes to allow the medication to be absorbed effectively. This may help reduce the feeling of blockage.
2. Gentle Tilting: If you feel that the drops are still present in your ear, you can gently tilt your head to the side and pull on your earlobe to help facilitate drainage. This may encourage any residual fluid to flow out.
3. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the outer ear can help alleviate discomfort and may promote drainage. The warmth can also help relax the muscles around the ear, potentially easing the sensation of fullness.
4. Avoid Cotton Swabs: While it may be tempting to use cotton swabs to remove the fluid, this can push the drops further into the ear canal and potentially cause more blockage. It’s best to avoid inserting anything into the ear canal.
5. Monitor Symptoms: If the sensation of blockage persists for more than a day or two, or if you experience increased pain, discharge, or hearing loss, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to examine your ear to ensure there are no complications, such as an accumulation of fluid or wax that could be causing the blockage.
6. Self-Drying: In most cases, the fluid from ear drops will eventually dry out on its own. However, if you are concerned about the fluid remaining in your ear, you can try to encourage drainage as mentioned above.
7. Consult Your Doctor: If you continue to feel discomfort or if your hearing does not improve, it is advisable to return to your ENT specialist. They can assess your ear and determine if further treatment is necessary, such as suctioning out any excess fluid or addressing any underlying issues.
In summary, while it is common to feel a sensation of fullness after using ear drops, there are several strategies you can employ to manage this feeling. Allowing time for absorption, using gentle tilting techniques, and applying warmth can all help. If symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any concerns promptly can help prevent complications.
