How many times should ear drops be applied for complete recovery?
Hello.
It seems that my right ear is blocked.
I went to see a doctor, and the doctor said that my ear canal is slightly swollen due to inflammation from frequent ear digging.
They prescribed me ear drops.
However, after using the drops, my hearing has become even less clear! I've used the drops three or four times, and I still feel like my ear is blocked.
Is this situation normal? Generally, how many times or how long should ear drops be used to alleviate the feeling of blockage in the ear? Thank you!

Dear Ms.
Ho,
Hello, it is common to experience inflammation and swelling of the external auditory canal.
After instilling ear drops, it is possible for the medication to remain in the ear canal, which may exacerbate the feeling of fullness.
It is recommended to continue using the ear drops, and you should return to the ENT department for cleaning of the external auditory canal.
Once the secretions or earwax are properly removed, you should see improvement.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

When dealing with ear issues, particularly those involving inflammation or blockage, it's essential to understand the underlying causes and the appropriate treatment protocols. In your case, it seems that you have been experiencing symptoms of ear blockage and inflammation, likely due to frequent ear cleaning, which can lead to irritation and swelling of the ear canal.
Ear drops are often prescribed to help reduce inflammation, treat infections, or soften earwax. However, the effectiveness and frequency of use can vary based on the specific condition being treated. Generally, if your doctor has prescribed ear drops, they will provide specific instructions regarding how often to use them. Typically, ear drops may be used two to three times a day, but this can vary based on the formulation and the severity of the condition.
It's not uncommon for patients to feel a sensation of fullness or blockage in the ear after starting ear drops. This can occur for several reasons:
1. Fluid Accumulation: The drops may cause temporary fluid accumulation in the ear canal, leading to a sensation of fullness.
2. Inflammation: As the drops work to reduce inflammation, there may be a period where the swelling causes a feeling of blockage.
3. Earwax: If earwax is present, the drops may soften it, but it might also temporarily exacerbate the sensation of blockage until it is fully expelled or removed.
If you have used the ear drops as directed for several days and still feel a significant blockage or if your symptoms worsen, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to reassess your condition, as persistent blockage could indicate a more serious issue, such as an ear infection or impacted earwax that requires professional removal.
In terms of recovery, the timeline can vary. Some patients may notice improvement within a few days, while others may take longer, especially if there is significant inflammation or infection. If your doctor has not specified a duration for using the drops, it is generally advisable to continue using them for the duration recommended, but not to exceed the prescribed amount without consulting your doctor.
In summary, while ear drops can be effective in treating ear inflammation and blockage, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience persistent blockage, increased pain, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical advice promptly. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your treatment plan or explore other interventions to ensure proper healing and recovery. Always remember that self-diagnosing or self-treating can sometimes lead to complications, so professional guidance is key in managing ear health.
