How should ear drops be administered, and what is the appropriate dosage?
Hello, I have ear fungus, and my doctor prescribed ear drops for otitis media and ear fungus.
Each time I return for a check-up, I only receive one bottle of each.
I need to apply them to both ears twice a day, and I find that I finish a bottle in two to three days.
I would like to understand how to properly administer the ear drops and how much is the correct dosage.
I usually ask a family member to apply the drops until they can see the liquid in the ear, which means I apply it more externally to cover the ear canal.
However, this requires about 10 drops, and the medication runs out quickly.
If I only apply two or three drops, I’m unsure if it adequately covers the affected area.
Currently, I am using Ear Recovery and Mecon.
If possible, it would be great to have photos or videos for reference.
Additionally, how long should I wait between applying these two medications, and which one should I apply first?

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology
Instill 2-3 drops at a time.
Do not use Ear Drops Xin and Meikang together (wait until one medication has dried before applying the other).
Wishing you safety.

When it comes to using ear drops, especially for conditions like ear infections or fungal infections, it's crucial to follow proper guidelines to ensure effective treatment and avoid wastage of medication. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to properly use ear drops, including dosage and application tips.
Dosage and Application Tips
1. Correct Dosage: For most ear drops, including those for ear infections or fungal infections, the typical dosage is about 2-3 drops per application. It’s important to avoid using excessive amounts, as this can lead to wastage and may not necessarily improve the effectiveness of the treatment. If you find that you are using an entire bottle in just a few days, it may be worth discussing this with your healthcare provider to ensure that the prescribed dosage is appropriate for your condition.
2. Application Technique:
- Preparation: Before applying the drops, wash your hands thoroughly to prevent introducing any bacteria into the ear canal.
- Positioning: Tilt your head to the side or lie down with the affected ear facing up. This position helps the drops reach the ear canal more effectively.
- Instillation: Gently pull the outer ear (pinna) upwards and backwards to straighten the ear canal. This allows for better penetration of the drops. Administer the prescribed number of drops into the ear canal. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your ear to maintain sterility.
- After Application: Keep your head tilted for a few minutes to allow the medication to penetrate the ear canal. You can also gently massage the area around the ear to help the drops move deeper into the canal.
3. Frequency of Use: If your doctor has prescribed the drops to be used twice a day, ensure that you space out the applications evenly. For example, if you apply the drops in the morning and evening, try to maintain a consistent schedule to optimize the medication's effectiveness.
4. Using Multiple Medications: If you have been prescribed more than one type of ear drop (like the ones you mentioned: ear drops for middle ear infections and antifungal drops), it’s important to space out their application. A general recommendation is to wait at least 30 minutes between applying different ear drops. This allows the first medication to be absorbed properly before introducing the second one.
5. Order of Application: If you are using two different types of ear drops, it is usually advisable to apply the one that is meant for immediate relief or the one that is more critical to your condition first. For example, if one is an antifungal and the other is for an infection, consult your doctor on which should be prioritized based on your specific symptoms.
6. Monitoring and Follow-Up: After starting the ear drops, monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice no improvement after a few days of treatment, or if your symptoms worsen, it’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to reassess your condition or adjust your treatment plan.
Conclusion
Using ear drops effectively requires attention to detail in terms of dosage, application technique, and timing. By following these guidelines, you can maximize the effectiveness of your treatment while minimizing waste. If you have any concerns about the amount of medication you are using or the effectiveness of your treatment, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that you are on the right track to recovery.
