Ear congestion

I recently visited a doctor due to ear pain, and the doctor prescribed ear drops for me.
After using the drops, I woke up the next day with a feeling of fullness in my ear.
Is this normal? I also have a wound inside my ear.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: After administering ear drops, it is necessary to allow the medication to remain in the ear for 10-15 minutes.
Then, tilt your head to one side to let the medication drain out.
If you still feel a blockage, it may be due to an excess of earwax or secretions.
It is advisable to return for a follow-up appointment with an otolaryngologist for local treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Experiencing a sensation of ear congestion after using ear drops can be concerning, especially if you have a history of ear pain or injury. It’s important to understand the potential reasons behind this sensation and whether it is a normal response to treatment.

When you apply ear drops, they are designed to penetrate the ear canal and provide relief from various conditions, such as infections or inflammation. However, if there is an existing injury or inflammation in the ear canal, the drops may interact with the affected area, leading to a feeling of fullness or congestion. This sensation can occur for several reasons:
1. Fluid Retention: After applying ear drops, some of the liquid may remain in the ear canal, especially if the drops are not allowed to drain properly. This can create a feeling of fullness or blockage. It is generally recommended to tilt your head to the side after applying the drops to allow any excess fluid to escape.

2. Earwax Displacement: If there is a significant amount of earwax present, the application of ear drops can sometimes cause the wax to shift, leading to a temporary sensation of blockage. This can be particularly true if the ear drops are designed to soften earwax.

3. Inflammation or Infection: If there is an underlying condition such as otitis externa (outer ear infection) or otitis media (middle ear infection), the application of ear drops may exacerbate the sensation of fullness. Inflammation can lead to swelling in the ear canal, which may contribute to a feeling of congestion.

4. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. If the tube is not functioning properly, you may experience a sensation of fullness in the ear, especially after applying drops that may affect the surrounding tissues.

Given that you mentioned having a wound in your ear, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the sensation of fullness persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as increased pain, discharge, or hearing loss, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to examine your ear to ensure that there is no infection or other complications arising from the use of the ear drops.

In summary, while experiencing a feeling of ear congestion after using ear drops can be normal, especially if there is an existing condition, it is essential to remain vigilant. If the sensation does not resolve or if you have concerns about your ear health, seeking further evaluation from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist would be a prudent step. They can provide a thorough examination and determine if any additional treatment is necessary.
