Ear drops causing ear blockage?

I have an earache.
I saw a doctor yesterday, and the doctor said it was due to earwax blockage.
The earwax is too deep, and I need to use ear drops for three days and return for suction.
However, this morning after I applied the ear drops, I lay on my side to wait for ten minutes, but I accidentally fell asleep.
When I woke up, it had been more than ten minutes, and my ear felt blocked, and I could feel the ear drops moving inside my ear.
Is this okay? Will there be any issues? What should I do?

Hello, when earwax is impacted, using ear drops may increase the feeling of fullness, but it is effective in softening the earwax.
It is recommended to continue using the drops for three days and then return for cleaning.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

It sounds like you're experiencing some discomfort and concern regarding the use of ear drops and the sensation of your ear being blocked. Let's break down your situation and provide some guidance based on medical knowledge.

When you apply ear drops, especially for the purpose of softening earwax (cerumen), it's important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider. Ear drops are typically designed to help dissolve or loosen earwax, making it easier to remove. However, if you accidentally leave the drops in your ear for longer than recommended, it can lead to a sensation of fullness or blockage, as you described.

The feeling of your ear being blocked after using ear drops could be due to several factors:
1. Earwax Compaction: Sometimes, the ear drops can cause the earwax to swell or become more compact, which may lead to a sensation of blockage. This is especially true if the earwax was already impacted before you started using the drops.

2. Fluid Retention: If you feel like the drops are still in your ear, it could be that the fluid has not fully drained out. This can create a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear.
3. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. If there is any swelling or blockage in this area, it can contribute to feelings of fullness or discomfort in the ear.

Given your situation, here are some steps you can take:
- Do Not Insert Anything into Your Ear: Avoid using cotton swabs or any other objects to try to remove the earwax or fluid, as this can push the wax further in or cause injury to the ear canal.

- Allow Time for Drainage: If you feel that the ear drops are still in your ear, try to remain upright for a while to allow gravity to help the fluid drain out. You can also gently tilt your head to the side to encourage drainage.

- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear may help alleviate discomfort and promote drainage.

- Follow Up with Your Doctor: Since you mentioned that you have a follow-up appointment in three days, it’s essential to keep that appointment. If your symptoms worsen or you experience severe pain, hearing loss, or discharge from the ear, you should seek medical attention sooner.

- Hydration and Swallowing: If you experience any pressure changes, especially if you are flying or in a situation where pressure changes occur, swallowing or yawning can help equalize the pressure in your ears.

In summary, while it’s not uncommon to feel a sensation of blockage after using ear drops, it’s important to monitor your symptoms. If the feeling persists or worsens, or if you have any concerns about your ear health, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can assess your ear and determine the best course of action, which may include professional cleaning or additional treatment if necessary. Remember, your ear health is important, and taking proactive steps can help ensure a quick resolution to your discomfort.
