Discomfort after using ear drops?
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing severe ear pain upon waking up recently, so I visited a family medicine clinic.
The doctor diagnosed me with ear inflammation and prescribed Bauricon ear drops for me to use.
After applying it in the morning, I felt a slight itching sensation in my ear, along with a feeling of fullness as if my ear canal was blocked, and my hearing seemed to be slightly diminished.
Since it was my first time using it, I only applied one drop and did so just once in the morning.
However, the feeling of fullness in my ear persisted even after I took a shower in the evening.
I would like to ask if this is normal? Will this sensation improve over time? Additionally, is the correct way to use the ear drops to tilt my head, apply the drops, wait for ten minutes, and then tilt my head in another direction to let any excess medication drain out while wiping the outer ear? Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hello, experiencing a feeling of fullness after using ear drops may be related to the interaction of the medication with earwax or secretions, which can cause them to swell after absorbing moisture.
This sensation may persist for up to three days.
It is advisable to return to the otolaryngology department for local treatment to remove the secretions, which usually leads to significant improvement.
As for the method of using the ear drops, your description of the technique is correct.

When using ear drops, especially for conditions like ear infections, it's not uncommon to experience some discomfort or unusual sensations in the ear. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a few common side effects after using the ear drops prescribed by your doctor.
Firstly, the itching and sensation of fullness or blockage in the ear can occur after applying ear drops. This is often due to the medication itself, which may cause temporary irritation or a reaction in the ear canal. The feeling of reduced hearing or a "blocked" sensation can also be attributed to the drops, especially if they are viscous or if they accumulate in the ear canal.
It's important to note that while some discomfort can be expected, it should not be severe or persistent. If the sensations you are experiencing—itching, fullness, or reduced hearing—continue for an extended period or worsen, it would be advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether the symptoms are a normal reaction to the medication or if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
Regarding the correct usage of ear drops, you are on the right track. Typically, the recommended method is to tilt your head to the side, allowing the ear you are treating to face upwards. After instilling the drops, it's beneficial to remain in that position for a few minutes to ensure the medication penetrates the ear canal effectively. Afterward, you can tilt your head in the opposite direction to allow any excess fluid to drain out. Wiping the outer ear gently with a clean tissue can help remove any residual drops.
In terms of your concern about whether the sensations will improve over time, many patients find that any initial discomfort subsides as the medication takes effect and the underlying condition improves. However, if you notice that the symptoms persist beyond a day or two, or if you develop new symptoms such as increased pain, discharge, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while some discomfort after using ear drops can be normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If they do not improve or if you have concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Proper usage of ear drops is key to ensuring effective treatment, and following the instructions provided by your doctor will help maximize the benefits of the medication while minimizing discomfort.
