Abnormal bleeding
This cycle, I underwent in vitro fertilization, and I had my egg retrieval on Monday.
About half a day after the retrieval, I experienced bright red bleeding, which then stopped.
However, I still feel bloated and have sharp pains in my lower abdomen, which I understand.
On Tuesday around 6 PM, I started to have a small amount of bleeding (only noticeable when wiping), which was darker in color and accompanied by light yellow discharge, resembling the end of a menstrual period.
This has persisted for a day.
The doctor advised me to start taking progesterone after the egg retrieval, and I have been following that.
Could you please advise what this situation might be? Do I need to return for a check-up? P.S.
I am currently experiencing bloating in my abdomen, and occasionally mild sharp pain in the ovarian area.
Thank you, doctor.

It is normal to experience some bleeding after egg retrieval, and there may also be mild bloating and pain in the lower abdomen.
If these symptoms persist for too many days, it is advisable to return to the obstetrics and gynecology clinic for a follow-up.

After undergoing egg retrieval as part of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, experiencing abnormal bleeding and discomfort in the lower abdomen can be concerning. It's important to understand the physiological changes that occur during this process and the potential implications of the symptoms you are experiencing.
Firstly, it is not uncommon to experience some bleeding after egg retrieval. The procedure involves transvaginal ultrasound aspiration, where a needle is guided through the vaginal wall to retrieve eggs from the ovaries. This process can cause minor trauma to the ovarian tissue and surrounding blood vessels, leading to light bleeding. The bright red blood you observed shortly after the procedure is likely a result of this minor trauma. The subsequent darker blood and yellowish discharge you described may indicate that the bleeding is tapering off, which can resemble the end of a menstrual period.
The abdominal discomfort and bloating you are experiencing can also be attributed to the hormonal changes and the physical manipulation of the ovaries during the egg retrieval process. It is common for women to feel some degree of discomfort, cramping, or bloating following the procedure. These symptoms are generally mild and should gradually improve over time.
However, if the bleeding persists, increases in volume, or is accompanied by severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention. While light spotting can be normal, significant or prolonged bleeding may indicate complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) or an infection. OHSS can occur when the ovaries respond excessively to the fertility medications used to stimulate egg production, leading to swollen ovaries and fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Symptoms of OHSS can include severe abdominal pain, rapid weight gain, and shortness of breath, which require immediate medical evaluation.
Regarding the use of progesterone (often referred to as "黄体素" or luteal phase support), it is standard practice to start progesterone supplementation after egg retrieval to support the uterine lining and prepare it for potential embryo implantation. Continuing to take the prescribed medication is essential for optimizing your chances of a successful pregnancy.
In summary, while some bleeding and discomfort after egg retrieval can be expected, it is vital to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any significant changes or worsening of your condition, do not hesitate to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may perform an ultrasound or other diagnostic tests to ensure that everything is progressing as it should and to rule out any complications. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and open communication with your healthcare team is key during this sensitive time.
