Seeing flashes of light when closing the eyes?
I have floaters and amblyopia.
Recently, I noticed that when I close my eyes, I see flickering similar to a faulty fluorescent light.
I went to a clinic for a dilated eye exam, and the doctor said there were no significant issues with my retina or optic nerve, but did not elaborate on why this phenomenon occurs.
Could you please tell me what this condition might be?

It may be caused by vitreous traction on the retina, but the actual reason is unknown.
For reference.

More Info
Flashing lights behind closed eyes can be a concerning symptom, especially for individuals with pre-existing eye conditions such as floaters (known as "myodesopsia") and amblyopia (lazy eye). The experience you describe, where you see flickering lights resembling a malfunctioning fluorescent bulb when your eyes are closed, can be attributed to several factors, even if your recent eye examination showed no significant issues with your retina or optic nerve.
Understanding the Phenomenon
1. Visual Phenomena: The flickering lights you perceive may be a type of visual phenomenon known as "phosphenes." Phosphenes can occur when the retina is stimulated by pressure or other forms of mechanical stress, even if the eyes are closed. This can happen when you rub your eyes or when there is a change in light exposure, such as moving from a dark to a bright environment.
2. Retinal and Vitreous Changes: Given your history of floaters, it is possible that changes in the vitreous gel (the clear gel that fills the space between the lens and the retina) are contributing to your symptoms. As we age or due to certain eye conditions, the vitreous can become more liquid and may pull away from the retina, leading to sensations of flashing lights or flickering. This is often benign but can sometimes indicate more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments.
3. Nerve Activity: The brain processes visual information even when the eyes are closed. The flickering you experience could be a result of spontaneous neural activity in the visual cortex, which can create the perception of light or movement without actual visual stimuli.
4. Migraine-Related Symptoms: Although you mentioned not having a history of migraines, it’s worth noting that some individuals experience visual disturbances similar to those seen in migraine aura without the headache. These can include flashing lights or zigzag patterns and may occur in response to stress, fatigue, or other triggers.
When to Seek Further Evaluation
While your recent eye examination did not reveal any significant issues, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Here are some guidelines on when to seek further evaluation:
- Persistence of Symptoms: If the flashing lights continue or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as vision loss, increased floaters, or a shadow in your vision, it is crucial to return to an eye care professional for a more thorough examination.
- Changes in Vision: Any sudden changes in your vision, including blurriness, distortion, or new floaters, should prompt an immediate visit to an eye specialist.
- Associated Symptoms: If you begin to experience headaches, nausea, or other neurological symptoms alongside the visual disturbances, it may warrant further investigation to rule out other conditions.
Conclusion
In summary, the flashing lights you see behind closed eyes can be attributed to various benign causes, particularly in the context of your existing eye conditions. While your recent examination showed no significant issues, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult with an eye care professional if your symptoms persist or change. Regular eye check-ups are vital, especially for individuals with a history of floaters and other visual disturbances, to ensure that any potential issues are identified and managed promptly.
