Postoperative Issues After Laparoscopic Surgery
Hello.
I would like to ask about my condition.
I underwent laparoscopic surgery and hysteroscopy to remove endometriosis and adenomyosis.
It has been over two weeks since the surgery, and I have noticed a small lump about 5 cm to the right of my navel that is quite noticeable and can be felt.
It is approximately 1-2 cm in size and causes mild pain when pressed.
Is this normal? Since my next follow-up appointment is still half a month away, should I schedule an earlier visit?
Selena, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/02/18

After undergoing laparoscopic surgery to remove endometriosis and adenomyosis, it is not uncommon to experience various post-operative changes in the abdomen. The presence of a small lump or tumor-like structure near the surgical site, particularly in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen, can be concerning for patients. However, it is essential to understand the potential causes of such findings.
Firstly, the lump you are feeling could be a seroma, which is a collection of fluid that can accumulate in the surgical area after an operation. Seromas are relatively common after laparoscopic procedures and can present as a palpable mass under the skin. They may be tender to touch but are generally not harmful and often resolve on their own over time.
Another possibility is that the lump could be a hematoma, which is a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels, typically resulting from bleeding during or after surgery. Hematomas can also be tender and may take some time to resolve.
In some cases, the lump could represent scar tissue or adhesions forming as part of the healing process. Scar tissue can sometimes feel firm or raised and may be sensitive to pressure.
Given that you are experiencing tenderness with light pressure, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider sooner rather than later. While many post-operative changes are benign and resolve without intervention, any new or concerning symptoms should be evaluated to rule out complications such as infection or significant hematoma formation.
In terms of follow-up, if the lump persists, increases in size, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or changes in bowel or urinary habits, you should seek medical attention promptly. Your healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the nature of the lump.
In summary, while the presence of a small lump after laparoscopic surgery can be common and often benign, it is crucial to remain vigilant and communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. Early evaluation can provide peace of mind and ensure that any necessary interventions are taken if required. Always prioritize your health and do not hesitate to reach out to your medical team for guidance.
