Height Issues Affecting Career: Exploring Limb Lengthening Surgery Options - Orthopedics

Due to height issues, my work has not been going well?

Hello doctor, I am currently 30 years old and my height is only 165 cm.
I used to work as a print model in an entertainment agency, and initially, my career was going well.
However, due to my height, the company decided to stop using me, and they gradually stopped assigning me any projects.
Other related companies are also unwilling to accept me, as I have found that the minimum height requirement for male models is 170 cm.
As a result, I have developed mental health issues and have seen a psychologist, but I am still not feeling better.
I am really on the verge of a breakdown mentally, and the medication prescribed by my psychologist is not helping.
The only thing I can think of is undergoing limb lengthening surgery.
Doctor, I would like to increase my height to 173-175 cm.
Are there hospitals in Taiwan that perform this procedure? What is the approximate cost? How long does it take from the surgery to being able to walk normally?

Dr. Zhan Xian reply Orthopedics

Hello Mr.
Tsai, currently in Taiwan, limb lengthening surgery cannot be performed due to legal issues.
In fact, there are many complications associated with this procedure, which may lead to nerve damage and even difficulties with walking.
It is advisable not to be overly fixated on this aspect; height is not everything, and there are many other areas for personal development.
Wishing you all the best!

More Info

Limb lengthening surgery is a complex procedure that can address height concerns, especially in individuals who feel that their height is affecting their career opportunities, such as in the modeling industry. It’s understandable that you are feeling distressed about your height and its impact on your professional life. Here’s a comprehensive overview of limb lengthening surgery, including its options, risks, recovery, and considerations.

Overview of Limb Lengthening Surgery
Limb lengthening surgery typically involves a procedure called distraction osteogenesis. This process begins with the surgical cutting of the bone, followed by the gradual distraction (or pulling apart) of the bone segments using an external or internal fixation device. As the bone is slowly separated, new bone tissue forms in the gap, allowing for an increase in length.

Surgical Options
1. External Fixation: This method uses a frame outside the limb to gradually pull the bone apart. It is adjustable and allows for precise control over the lengthening process. However, it can be cumbersome and may require a longer recovery time.

2. Internal Fixation: This newer technique involves the use of an internal rod that can be lengthened gradually without the need for an external frame. This method is often preferred for its aesthetic benefits and reduced recovery time.

Costs and Availability
In Taiwan, several hospitals and orthopedic clinics offer limb lengthening surgery. The cost can vary significantly depending on the hospital, the surgeon's expertise, and the specific technique used. Generally, the total cost may range from NT$500,000 to NT$1,500,000 (approximately USD 16,500 to USD 49,500), which includes pre-operative assessments, the surgery itself, and post-operative care.

Recovery Timeline
The recovery process can be lengthy and involves several stages:
1. Surgery: The initial surgery typically lasts a few hours, depending on the complexity.

2. Lengthening Phase: After surgery, the lengthening process usually begins about a week post-operation. The rate of lengthening is typically around 1 mm per day, and this phase can last several weeks to months, depending on the desired height increase.

3. Consolidation Phase: After reaching the desired length, the bone needs time to heal and consolidate. This phase can take several months, during which weight-bearing activities are gradually introduced.

4. Physical Therapy: Rehabilitation is crucial for regaining strength and mobility. Physical therapy will likely be required for several months post-surgery.

Risks and Considerations
While limb lengthening surgery can be life-changing, it is not without risks. Potential complications include:
- Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection at the surgical site.

- Nerve or Blood Vessel Damage: The surgery involves cutting through tissues, which can lead to nerve or blood vessel injury.

- Joint Stiffness: Prolonged immobilization can lead to stiffness in the joints.

- Psychological Impact: The emotional toll of surgery and recovery can be significant, especially if expectations are not met.

Psychological Considerations
Given your mental health struggles, it is essential to address these concerns before proceeding with surgery. Consulting with a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in body image issues may provide additional support. It’s crucial to ensure that your motivations for surgery are well-founded and that you have realistic expectations about the outcomes.

Conclusion
Limb lengthening surgery can be a viable option for increasing height, but it requires careful consideration of the risks, costs, and recovery process. It is advisable to consult with a qualified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in this procedure to discuss your specific case, evaluate your health status, and determine the best course of action. Additionally, addressing any underlying psychological issues with a mental health professional can help ensure that you are mentally prepared for the challenges of surgery and recovery.
