Probability of Pregnancy

Hello, doctor.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
My girlfriend's period started on January 22nd and lasted for five days.
On February 14th, we had sexual contact, but there was no penetration and no ejaculation near her genital area; there was only some external friction, and it seems that only a little bit may have entered.
My girlfriend is still a virgin.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy in this situation?
In the first three days after that, she started to feel some breast fullness, but it wasn't very pronounced and there was no pain.
Her lower back felt slightly sore.
On the fourth day, she mentioned that her breasts felt fuller and that they hurt a little when pressed, and she also experienced some mild headaches.
She said that usually before her period, her breasts feel full but do not hurt, and she occasionally feels warm.
Are these signs of early pregnancy?
Additionally, during her winter break, she has been going to bed around 5 AM and waking up around 2 or 3 PM.
I'm wondering if her headaches could be due to oversleeping.
Could staying up late cause her period to be delayed? Should she take a pregnancy test? Over the past few days, she has developed an increased appetite, is sleeping more, has noticeably lower libido, and her breasts feel full but only slightly painful when pressed.
Could this be premenstrual syndrome (PMS)? Thank you, doctor, for your time in answering these questions.

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, if proper contraception measures have been taken, the chances of pregnancy should be low.
It is advisable to wait another week, and if menstruation still does not occur, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, it is essential to understand the signs, symptoms, and various factors that can influence conception. In your case, the scenario involves a non-penetrative sexual encounter, which typically carries a lower risk of pregnancy compared to penetrative intercourse. However, it is important to note that even pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, and if there was any direct contact with the vaginal area, there is a slight chance of pregnancy.

Regarding the symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing, breast tenderness and swelling, as well as changes in appetite and sleep patterns, can indeed be indicative of early pregnancy. However, these symptoms can also be attributed to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which many women experience in the days leading up to their menstrual period. PMS can cause a range of symptoms, including breast tenderness, mood swings, fatigue, and changes in appetite. The fact that your girlfriend has been staying up late and sleeping irregular hours could also contribute to her symptoms, including headaches and fatigue.

The timing of her menstrual cycle is also a crucial factor. If her last period started on January 22 and she had unprotected contact on February 14, she would be approaching the time when her next period is expected. If her cycles are regular, she might expect her next period around February 22. Stress, lifestyle changes, and sleep patterns can all influence the regularity of menstrual cycles, potentially causing delays.

Given the symptoms and the timing, it may be prudent for your girlfriend to take a home pregnancy test if her period is late. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable and can provide quick results. If the test is positive, it would be advisable for her to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and prenatal care. If the test is negative and her period does not arrive, she should also consult a healthcare provider to explore other potential causes for her missed period.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy from the described encounter is low, it is not zero. The symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing could be related to either early pregnancy or PMS. Monitoring her menstrual cycle and taking a pregnancy test if her period is late would be the best course of action. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular sleep patterns and stress management, can help regulate menstrual cycles and overall well-being.
